Kaserne
The old military caserne of Basel is a prominent point of the urban tissue of the city center and defines a plaza to the city and an urban landmark to the river facade of the Rhein. The refurbish of the main building reconnects these two spaces and provides a new cultural facility to the region.
The existing building works as a room matrix that has outlived multiple eras and is now extended into the twenty-first century: the careful position of the cores frees every space of fire regulations and allows ever changing uses through the life-span of the building, including an astonishing multifunctional space under the roof. The plaza and the river find each other in a spectacular covered plaza, ready for multiple uses, and in a new public side passage, creating a "porous" building with smaller private stairs.
This two-strategies (a room matrix of flexible spaces and a multiple connection between the two sides) will provide a new outstanding place for Basel, able to serve and connect the different building users and citizens all year long.
