My bacteria has a tumblr!!!

So the beginning of the Fall semester in Microbiology I was given a bacteria to research and write 4 papers on and at the end of the semester give a presentation on. When my instructor was giving the directions for the presentation he opened it up for us to be as creative as we wanted, even noting that a student the year prior had made an Eharmony profile for their bacteria. Well I'm highly competetive so this information to me meant I could just do any old powerpoint. I had to get fancy. And so the bacteria tumblr idea was born.

Now granted I only gave myself about 3 days to pull this all together and I only get 5 minutes to talk so it still flows more or less like a powerpoint, it is a presentation after all. But I am most definitely get a 100 on this for sheer awesomeness!!!

Discovery

Discovered in early 90's by Eshel Ben-Jacob et al.

Originally classified as Bacillus then reclassified in 1993

Found in soil, rhizosphere, vegetable matter, and insect larvae

Increasing interest due to possible importance in industry,  agriculture and medicine.

Morphology

Paenibacillus = almost rod-shaped

Dendritiformis = tree shaped

Spiral patterns 

   -T Morphotype- tip splitting

   -C Morphotype - Chiral, not identical to its mirror image

Lab Growth

LB broth

Between 20-45C

Optimal growth at 37C

Rod Shaped

1-2 mm in diameter

5.6 or 5.7 pH

Isolated occasionally from B. subtillis

Turns blue on X-gal plates

Drug resistant to: Penicillin, Septrin, Kanamycin, Tetracylcine, Streptomycin and others

Sibling Lethal Factor

Discovered in 2000

Sibling colonies inoculated side by side can inhibit the growth of one another by secreting a protein label Sibling Lethal Factor, SLF.

Acts selectively on the same bacterial strain

In high amounts causes induced death of cells close to border 

In sublethal amounts can induce morphotype and cell shape switching from cocci to motile rod shape.
