Insulation is to reduce heat loss due to convection, conduction or radiation.
People wear more clothes to prevent convection currents near their skin taking thermal energy away. Clothes also trap layers of air near the body, which is a good insulator as it doesn't conduct heat very well. Shiny clothes also help to stop heat from radiating away.
In a house, draught excluders in doors and windows are used to stop convection currents. Double glazing also traps layers of air in the windows, thus reducing the conduction ability of the windows. Roofs have loft insulation that also traps air, thus working in the same way.
