It was probably one of the few things that Kyuhan actually enjoyed doing. It was probably one of the few things that he could stand about the life he was living now. Maybe it was because the one year that remained in his father’s sentence was quickly coming to a close, but it seemed that more than ever he was thinking about every single moment in his past. He was thinking about how different he was, staying on this island that was away from everyone else on the mainland, that was so contrary to everything that he had experienced in his life thus far. Busan taught him much, it was where he first started his small cons with his father, and throwing away an entire lifetime of habit in two years was difficult. It was like going cold turkey, leaving everything he knew behind and trying to pretend to be something he wasn’t.
Noh Kyuhan was addicted to the thrill. He was addicted to the rush of the con, to the wave of energy that came over him when he saw that he had successfully manipulated someone into doing what he wanted. Maybe it was the thrill of the power, maybe it was the fact that he knew if he pulled something monumental off, he could see his father’s pride, the man didn’t know. What drew him to the profession versus what kept him there were two different things. His father drew him to it, but maybe the excitement kept him there. It was nothing like the boring and ordinary life he was living now, though there were those few moments when he wondered silently to himself if his mother wasn’t right. His whole life, Kyuhan had been kept away from the world of the workers. He always saw things from the very perspective his father had. Everyone worked hard and could earn. Some were smart enough to know how to keep those earnings to themselves and others were idiots that could be swindled out of it. It was hardly his fault if he simply made use of their weakness for his gain. That was how this world worked.
Survival of the fittest. Survival of the smartest. And he was among the fittest and smartest, so he would survive. It was why he was still around now right? He had learned very carefully how to survive so much so that he even left his father and ran to this island, covered all his bases and made sure that he didn’t get caught as well. Because he was surviving and now he was just holding out long enough for his father to come out so they could figure out what to do next. So Kyuhan could figure out what to do next. Whether it was to listen to his father or abide by his unknown mother’s wishes. There was no point thinking about it in that moment, and instead he just decided to go and secure themselves another supplier. He looked carefully through each of the stalls, stopping at the fish one where he felt that the fish looked the freshest. There wasn’t anyone or he couldn’t see if there was someone behind the stall because his entire attention was given to the ingredients and their quality.
