Just a quick question about Hannukah! I have a student who celebrates and I wanted to know if there was anything I could do to support them, other than simply giving well-wishes (or giving gifts, because I'm broke). If there's nothing I can do or if you're too busy, feel free to ignore, but thank you very much. Happy Hannukah!

Well, I can only speak for myself - I’m Reform - but by and large there’s not a lot done on Hannukah. You light the candles around sundown, you sing songs, you eat oily foods (latkes/levivot! sufganiyot!), you play dreidel, and all but the first one are optional. It’s a very minor holiday. There’s no requirement to avoid work, etc.

Wish them a Hag Sameach (happy holiday) and you’re basically good :) if you want to be extraordinarily nice, I guess you can get them gelt? cheap chocolate gold coins, usually about a dollar at the corner store. otherwise, as long as they have time to light the candles at night, they’re fine

That squid one is fucking hysterical, I am cracking up. Does he have a saber? Is it normal sized? Was he born a squid or did NMJ find a sentient squid and go "this is my brother." Amazing. Absolutely fantastic.

NMJ has so few opportunities to have fun, he deserves every instance of it he gets. NHS should be finding more opportunities for him to cause trouble, not less!

Zira could be persuaded to be interested in the sheer volume of stories he could collect on a kindle. fanfiction and fanart is as old as life itself, so they don’t need any introduction into that. have you seen the Sistine Chapel? have you read Shakspeare?

For some reason all I’m thinking of is NBC Hannibal. Which is a TV show, not a movie. (Still good, still recommend. Just... not what you’re looking for.)

I have a lot of affection for NBC Hannibal but I still haven’t seen the fourth season because of how the plot went off the rails a bit. I like NBC Hannibal but not really as a horror - what I like about it is really to do with Bryan Fuller’s directorial skill, because like...

There’s just so many wonderful little juxtapositions and contrasts throughout; acts of horrendous violence contrasted with beautiful music; slaughter interspliced with scenes of loving food preparation; bloody murder contrasted with shots of beautiful, luscious plates of food; scenes of horrible violence against intimate sex scenes.

I completely understand a lot of people’s criticism of Fuller, especially when it comes to violence against women (although I have to admit, I do still think he’s much better about it than most directors, because violence - even intimate violence - is shot in the same way with men), but like... The thing that he does the best, and the thing that makes Hannibal so difficult to watch, is the way that it pits our body’s reactions against one another in a way that’s jarring to the psyche.

Very hot, tender, or passionate sex scenes paired with murderous ones, or loving food preparation paired with violent cannibalism, like, these basically seek out our prime drives and tangle them up with our instinct for disgust, and it’s artfully done, it really is, and unlike with some directors where it feels like they’re doing that because they find violence sexy, in Hannibal it does just add to Hannibal as a character and the fucked-upness of the show. Especially when you contrast it to other bodies of his work, like Pushing Daisies.

God, sorry for the essay, but I do love NBC Hannibal, even if I prefer book!Hannibal as a character.

You need to make a note in all of your stories: “If you ever want to be satisfied reading anything ever again: turn back back now. There will never be another story written that matches this one in character, in content, in culture. Well, at least not until the next chapter.” Aka, I AM READING A HP FIC AND AM DISAPPOINTED BC I KEEP COMPARING IT TO YOURS AND FIND IT LACKING. THE CHARACTERS ARE SHALLOW THERE IS NO CASUAL DIVERSITY AND THE PLOT IS UNDERDEVELOPED BC I THINK OF YOUR TALENT AND WEEP
