Giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea).
We found this growing along the shady windbreak at Jane's house in eastern Wisconsin. It is about 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter, and the largest puffball I've ever seen.
Etymology note: Calvatia is aptly derived from the Latin word calvarium for skull or dome. Gigantea is self-evident, but isn't it a fun word to say?
