“Five Bullets Fail To Halt Fugitive,” Montreal Star. November 11, 1932. Page 3. ---- Man Finally Overtaken by Officer; Posting of ‘Red’ Bills Alleged --- Culminating a lively chase on St. Catherine street west, in which five shots were fired into the air, Joseph Leblanc, 22, was arrested early this morning on a charge of distributing circulars not approved by Director Fernand Dufresne and which are said to be a Communistic nature. Leblanc gave no address when arrested.
Informed that an individual was posting on street cars, public buildings and places, circulars which commented on Remembrance Day and lauded the heads of the Soviet Republic, Constable Laramee, of the St. Mathew street station, began an investigation.
His attention was soon drawn to a man in St. Catherine street west of Guy street. The district was placarded with posters which in addition gave notice of a meeting to be held November 17 at 286 St. Catherine street west.
When the constable approached the man he sought, the chase began. Five shots in the air followed, but undaunted, the fugitive maintained the sprint. Finally the officer overtook him and he gave his name as Leblanc.
A large number of posters were seized and will be produced as exhibits in the Recorder’s Court where the accused will appear tomorrow.
[AL: The amount of violence the Canadian state and elite, especially in Quebec, was willing to undertake to suppress even relatively minor acts of ‘subversion’ is not surprising but really needs to be emphasized again and again.]
