One of the interesting things about L. Frank Baum's writings is that he was never overly troubled by a need for consistency. If some detail or aspect of an earlier story interfered with his current one, he would either invent a fanciful explanation or--often as not--simply ignore the earlier version. Nowhere is this so apparent as in the story of how Princess Ozma was hidden away. In The Marvelous Land of Oz, Glinda tells us that "the Wizard of Oz, when he stole the throne from Ozma's father, hid the girl in some secret place." But in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, Ozma tells the Wizard that the wicked witch Mombi was "my grandfather's jailor, and afterward my father's jailor. When I was born she transformed me into a boy, hoping that no one would ever recognize me." No mention is made here of the Wizard's involvement in her abduction.
