Punished for meddling too often in the affairs of humanity. The Gods were sent back as punishment to live among the mortals, their powers greatly reduced. However, not all of them saw the sentence in such light. Many of them learned to thrive among the mortals instead.
Jareth eyed the young man. He was genuinely concerned for those younger than him. In a time when most adolescent youth were primarily focused on their self-centered interests. However, another idea occurred to him.
"You know we have something in common...you and I," he started as he shuffled around his room, using his cane to push aside some hanging clothes that were overflowing from his drawer. "Other than our great bountiful head of hair, I see that we share similar values...traits," he paused to give the kid some room to think. "I, too, have a great deal of responsibility...ruling a kingdom of dim-witted and often naive underlings...it takes a great deal of patience," he paused. "Empathy, if you will, let's say you....Steve," he paused, pointing his cane in his direction, not particularly fond of how his name rolled off his tongue. "A visit to my kingdom...I want to test how far your empathy actually reaches."
Steve looks at Jareth then sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose "And just how would this testing be done? I already live in one town full of dangerous and deadly things, what makes you think that I'd want to be set loose in a kingdom full of them?" He tilts his head to the side and gets a thoughtful look on his face "Although, I would be interested in visiting your kingdom so maybe my interest will take over for my common sense and I will accept your invitation." Steve then gets up from the chair that he is sitting in and walks over to Jareth "You want to test how far my empathy will get me in your kingdom and I wonder why that is. Is yours not appreciated or do you just want someone to compare notes with?"
He goes over to his desk and picks up his pocket knife and places it in his pocket "When would you want to do this, if I were to say yes? And how would we get there?" Steve looks at the wall in front of him "I'm tired of this town and would like to leave it for a while just to see what's out there. It seems like everywhere I turn here someone has their nose in my business or is trying to tell me how to live my life, if I could find a place where no one was doing that for a while I might be a whole lot happier." He turns back to look at Jareth "Alright, I'll go with you but if I end up dead or something just know that if I come back as a ghost, I'm going to be haunting you."
