Phantom - Terry Goodkind
Re-Read: June 2017
Shit starts to get so real in the end game and honestly by the end of this book I was like “how is this going to end in only one more book?” Goodkind sets it up so that it looks pretty hopeless for the main characters at the end of Phantom. But my guess is that was because he wanted to pull some desperation fuelled badassery in the last book. Although there was some badassery in this book too. Like when Richard was “escaping” from Tamarang.
Things that delighted me about this book was the tie-ins to Wizard’s First Rule. Goodkind had plans and damn if he didn’t have shit going in the first book that is only coming back in book ten. First Princess (now Queen) Violet is back, unfortunately. I hate that bitch and she got what was coming to her in Wizard’s First Rule. But apparently we’re not done with her yet. New player on the field though is Six, the witch-woman from the Old World. She’s crazy, but also crazy good. It makes her a good enemy. Also the Night Wisps are back in what seems like a critical role, but in the end I find myself debating whether their role was even necessary.
The funniest thing in this book is the Sisters of the Dark getting back to Jagang. Like they thought they were free, but the whole time they weren’t, it was so satisfying. The other most satisfying moment in this book is Richard sending his army into the Old World to fuck shit up. God, I just loved that scene.
