My favourite Uncle Thomas & Aunty Lilian make the best fish & chips at Greenwoods Fresh Catch, 1 Pah Rd, Greenwoods Corner. The minute you walk into the shop, you feel the warmth and friendliness of Uncle & Aunty’s welcome. A clip of Mr Marvellous John Campbell’s TV review of Greenswoods Fresh Catch is on continous rotate. Signed photos of stars who been adorn the walls: Jonah Lomu, Tana Umaga have written glowing endorsements. But the fish & chips speak for themselves. You can choose from hoki, tarakihi or if you want a special treat, snapper. They will either batter or crumb, cooked in fresh oil and served with minimal or no salt. Uncle Thomas gets his fish fresh everyday from the market. They keep the menu simple: fish & chips, squid and onion rings, spring rolls and some days specials of oyster or fish cakes. Kumara chips are also available. Uncle Thomas is an institution at Greenwoods Corner. He wears his captain’s hat (having cooked on cruise ships), and says he’s been working since he was 8 years old and he’s 83 now. As long as he’s healthy, he will continue cooking. Aunty Lilian (77yo) grounds him, and is the driving force in this operation. She's a typical Aunty, and is always trying to match-make yours truly. Oh my God!
