This question popped into my head at work. In the WingFic, when shriek hawks give feathers, would those feathers change if the original owners' wings changed, or would they stay the same color as when plucked?
Yeah, they change. Because it's "living beskar," the feathers are alive as long as their owners are. They die when their owners die, losing their beskar properties. Likewise, if the owner experiences life changing events such that their patterns change, or their affiliation changes so their colors change, all of their living feathers no matter who they're with will also reflect that change.
@paichan13 asked: Widomauk/ Pre-Shadowidomauk where Molly and Caleb were the ones to walk Essek home from dinner at the Xhorhaus?
(ao3)
“I’m glad you decided to come,” Caleb said as they made their way through the Firmaments. The night was pleasingly cool and calm in comparison to the raucous atmosphere of the Xhorhaus and Caleb was enjoying their gentle pace though the city, letting the buzz of the night’s excitement settle under his skin.
“As am I,” Essek smiled, small and with that same awkwardness that had dogged much of his interactions through dinner. It was endearing how new Essek seemed to be to the very concept of friendship and how hard he was trying. Caleb was reminded of the stray cats around the Soltryce Academy that he managed to tame to a degree, all growls and fluffed up fur until he won them over and then he had a hard time getting them off his lap so he could go back to studying.
“Next time you’ll have to stick more than your pretty feet in the hot tub darling,” Molly teased as he leant into Essek’s space.
Essek stiffened as he floated forward, his ears quivered and his hand twitched slightly towards them before quickly falling back to his side, as though he was going to hide his ears but thought better of it. An involuntary action? Caleb found himself watching the drow’s delicate long pointed ears with interest. He contemplated just what would make them flick like that again. Molly caught his gaze with a fanged smirk, clearly thinking the same thing.
“We’ll work up to that,” Caleb said, taking pity on the flustered wizard.
Molly hummed thoughtfully as he practically skipped down the empty street, “Perhaps start with a smaller group? Say two of us. The Mighty Nein can be a bit much all in one go.”
“You are all an interesting lot,” Essek said diplomatically and Caleb stifled a chuckle because that was the most diplomatic response he’d ever heard in regards to describing the Mighty Nein.
“Interesting? I like it. Most people just call us arseholes,” Molly said, dragging the subterfuge away from Essek’s words like a man throwing the curtains open to let the sunlight into a darkened room. Essek choked a little at the bluntness.
“It’s alright Herr Theylss, we are fully aware of our flaws,” Caleb soothed as Essek attempted to find something polite to say to counter Molly’s statement.
“You’ll get used to it,” Molly promised with a wink.
“I uh, I look forward to it,” Essek replied and Caleb heard the barely hidden thread of hope in his words.
“Oh you will, we’ve claimed you now. And we’re a possessive bunch, aren’t we darling?” Molly grinned a little shark like at Caleb.
“Ja, you won’t get rid of us now.”
Essek swallowed thickly, looking a little uncomfortable and Caleb wondered if he should subtly signal to Molly to pull back on the flirting a little, “Well, it’s a good thing I don’t have other social engagements.”
Or perhaps Essek was just a little rusty at such things. Though there was something sharp about his smile that worried Caleb. He pushed it away though, old paranoia did him no good here.
Essek wasn’t all that dissimilar to himself and when Caleb had first dealt with Molly’s flirtations he’d found himself more than a little lost and having to dust off some old skills. For all of Essek’s sauve confident air there was something vulnerable and lonely underneath it all and Caleb would bet more than a few pieces of gold on the fact that Essek hadn’t truly flirted with anybody in a very long time. If ever.
“Good then you won’t mind us filling up the calendar a little,” Molly said, his tail flicking under Essek’s robe to caress Essek’s leg for a second. Something he could have easily played off as an accident if not for the salacious grin on his face.
“What did you have in mind?” Essek asked, trying to subtly clear his throat.
Molly hummed thoughtfully, “How about a few study dates?”
Caleb nodded, trying to hide his eagerness at the idea, “If you’re amenable.”
“Certainly, you’ve proven to be a quick study and it’s rewarding to find someone with a similar passion for dunamancy,” Essek said and Caleb preened at the praise, “and yourself Mister Tealeaf? Where do your interests lie?”
Molly’s smirk grew a little more, “Oh I have my own interests in wizards.”
“Are you magically inclined?” Essek asked, a hint of playfulness to his tone that made Caleb a little proud of his fellow wizard.
“Sure, it has some interesting uses,” Molly said, his voice practically a purr.
“Numerous,” Essek agreed, sounding to all the world completely unaware of the double entendre Molly wasn’t even attempting to hide, if not for the darker shade of purple to his cheeks.
Caleb watched the two of them duel with no small measure of amusement and a growing curl of familiar heat low in his gut. An old memory surfaced, Astrid and Eadwulf trading flirty remarks back and forth like a fencing match and Caleb couldn’t help but find the similarities. The grief over the life he’d lost, the love that had once filled every dark corner of his heart and that had made him feel utterly invincible before it too had curled and blackened to ash, was less potent now, a low simmer in comparison to the searing burn his old life used to leave. He let it fade away leaving behind just the slightest squeeze around his heart as he watched Molly and Essek circle each other.
“Ah, here we are,” Essek said, gesturing to a series of interconnected towers behind an iron fence. Molly stared up at the Shadowhand’s home with a perplexed expression.
“What is it with wizards and towers?” he mumbled to himself.
“They’re fun?” Caleb answered and it drew a small smile from Essek.
“Quite, though in seriousness there’s something more pliable about a cylindrical shape to magic when one is attempting to change the interior to suit their needs,” Essek informed and Molly blinked.
“Huh, there’s an actual reason for it.”
“Easier to hide rooms in a tower than a straightforward home,” Caleb added and Essek nodded.
“Exactly.”
Molly grinned, “Who knew wizards had a sneaky side?”
Caleb coughed loudly to draw Molly’s attention and once he had it he raised a pointed eyebrow, as if to remind Molly of his own sneaky wizard. Molly chuckled in response.
Essek smiled shyly at the exchange as he appeared to fidget in place. Well, as much as one could whilst floating stationary.
“Well then, it’s rather late,” Essek hesitated, “I shall bid you a good night Mister Widogast, Mister Tealeaf. Thank you for the escort.” It seemed to Caleb as though he was delaying the inevitable to spend even a few more seconds in their company which warmed Caleb all over.
“Until our next appointment, gute nacht Herr Theylss,” Caleb said fondly, a promise held in the affectionate words for much more to come.
Molly sauntered over and took Essek’s hand, drawing it up to place a lingering kiss on the knuckles whilst keeping eye contact with the blushing drow, “Sleep well.”
He didn’t so much as let go of Essek’s hand, instead letting gravity slip it from grasp as he slowly drew back. Ensuring the contact lingered until the last possible second.
“Uh, yes, thank you. You as well. I look forward to our next meeting,” Essek said awkwardly, for a moment it looked as though he would continue before apparently failing to find anything further to add, thoroughly thrown by Mollymauk’s flirtations. With a quick embarrassed nod, he swiftly turned around and quickly floated into the grounds surrounding his home. The stiff way he held himself suggesting he was trying desperately not to look backwards at the two of them.
“You are an absolute menace Mister Mollymauk,” Caleb scolded without any heat, eyes still glued to the retreating Shadowhand before he slipped into his tower.
“Only in the right company,” Molly hooked his chin over Caleb’s shoulder, “I wonder if that blush goes all the way down?”
“Truly dangerous leibling,” Caleb chuckled. Molly snorted, tapping his horn against the side of Caleb’s head affectionately.
If it's not too late to ramble I gotta love on Rex and the Domino twins. I got so invested in Fives and Echo's stories (Fives especially makes me cry) and then Rex just snuck in my heart in the last couple episodes of s7. I always have to try not to think about Rex telling Echo what happened to Fives cause *ouch*. Also just a big ol' middle finger to Pong Krell.
💙💙💙 Rex, Fives, Echo - I love them too, and I especially love that you mention them together! I think it's very easy to focus on just the Domino Twins as a pair, and it's true that they did go through so much together as the survivors of Domino Squad. But Rex specifically says that the three of them developed battle strategies together, and given their rank and seniority differences, I can't help but imagine Rex really taking the other two under his wing after they're picked up from Rishi Moon. Fives was such a significant character in TCW, and I can't help but feel sad that he's not given more than a passing mention in TBB. I hope we'll get more references to him in TBB S2, especially with AZI now with them!
Thank you so much for sharing your faves!

In response to: Share with me your favorite clone(s) and why?
I gotta wonder, with beskar body feathers, how do the clones shave or style them? Are they just slightly more fragile than the feathers that make up their wings? Do they use beskar razors/scissors?
They use razors/knives/scissors that they line with their own feathers! Just as beskar weapons can pierce beskar armor, living beskar (feathers) can also cut living beskar. They use a base tool to use its shape and functionality, and then stick on fine living feathers along the edge.
The clones can also consciously relax or stiffen their feathers, so if they intentionally relax themselves for a feather-cut, their beskar-plated cutting tools work better!
(response given for Take Flight, Brother All, my winged!clones AU)
I recently dove headfirst into your winged!clones au and I love it. You responded to some asks about Crosshair and this kinda random idea popped in my head. What if he has the same increased eyesight that the rest of the clones have, but he's "defective" because he doesn't have wings or they didn't develop properly for him to fly. That could even be something for the whole BB. They have their increased abilities and are still good soldiers, but can't join regular ranks. Idk was just an idea.
Hey there, and thank you so much for enjoying Take Flight!
That's certainly one interesting possibility on their mutations, I like the idea! That being said, they probably will have wings in some form or another in this particular AU, simply because being wingless has another meaning altogether.
But also to be fair, I don't know how deep I'll go into the Batch, if at all. I find it a little less interesting to explore "exceptions" to the clones without first sharing more on everyone else first, if that make sense! And I do have a strong personal bias towards Cody and the 212th ^ ^;
Thank you either way for stopping by to chat with me <3
