April 25, 1974 - On this day the Carnation Revolution, a left-wing military uprising backed by mass popular resistance, overthrew Portugal’s fascist dictatorship after 48 years. It ended the Estado Novo regime, brought democracy, and accelerated the collapse of Portugal’s colonial empire in Africa. [link]

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC)

The PAIGC waged a successful guerrilla war against Portugal, securing independence for both Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Becoming the first liberation movement in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve it's goal through armed struggle.

We cannot therefore allow any interest of our people to be restricted or thwarted because of our condition as Africans. We must put the interests of our people higher, in the context of the interests of mankind in general, and then we can put them in the context of the interests of Africa in general
