Street Fashion: Jelly Sandals

Recently, I was looking at photographs of me as a child and realised that one- I was a fashionable five year old girl, and two- I owned about three pairs of jelly sandals. Well, what exactly are jelly sandals? They aren’t new, undiscovered items of clothing, seeing as they were invented in the 1950’s. They are simply coloured plastic sandals who have a made a comeback into our wardrobes. I admit, I don’t own a pair (yet), but I’ve decided that I will revive my 70s-80s style and buy some. Teenage girls on the street are wearing them, girls on tumblr are wearing them and fashionable preschoolers are wearing them. It seems as though this street style targets almost all age groups. Venturing into shopping centres I have noticed that nearly all shoe stores are selling ‘jellies’- and whether they be black, blue, pink or sparkly, people are them. If you really want to spice it up, ‘jellies’ with heels are also available. Who said you couldn’t be laid back and formal at the same time? If you’re from the Northern Hemisphere, it isn’t exactly the perfect time of the year to wear sandals but when the earth turns I’m sure you will also embrace this retro fad because there are definitely a pair of these sandals that will suit you.

So go ahead, get a pair of jellies.

The sun hides behind the dark, rolling clouds creating shadows as warmth is replaced with a cool wind. The fresh smell of rain hangs in the air whilst people reach for their umbrellas and raincoats, running for cover as the skies open. The rain pours down, painting the footpaths with dark drops and creating small streams for leaves to float steadily in the gutter.

On a rainy day, you feel cosy and comfy, nestled in a mess of sheets and duvets. Your mind is completely transported into the book you’re reading whilst the raindrops drumming against rooftops outside provide a soundtrack to the story. Perhaps you are watching a movie, cuddled up in bed or on the couch, wishing that the rain would never stop so that you could stay there forever- hot chocolate is the perfect drink for such a day.

On a rainy day, people view the world in different ways. Some look at the rain and see a nuisance. They cover their heads with their arms, believing that they are shielding themselves from getting wet, only to arrive home and realise that their efforts were in vain. Yet others dream about walking in the rain with their lover and standing beneath a tree, kissing passionately, their spontaneity brought about by the slight fog enveloping the streets.

Even though sunshine eventually comes and the raindrops turn into gold smatterings on buildings and footpaths, a rainy day once in a while is always a good day.
