Is a tattoo ruining your job prospects?
Don’t live with that regret...
Could something as simple as having a few tattoos be ruining your career prospects? It’s something you probably don’t consider when you cover your body in inked art, but really you should, especially if you want to put yourself in the best possible position to have the pick of the prime roles.
Recent reports seem to suggest that any visible tattoos can be damaging your job hunt, which is pretty worrying when you consider just how much competition there is out there right now.
Rebecca Johnson from the Graduate Recruitment Bureau certainly seems to think so, she says, "I think in the majority of cases and certainly in the more corporate world, if there were two candidates in the running for a job and there was absolutely no difference between the candidates' skills/abilities resulting in the choice purely being based on presentation, most employers would pick the candidate without tattoos. I believe this would be to limit potential offence made to their clients."
She makes a good point...
You can get sacked for having a tattoo!
The policy relating to tattoos and dress code at work is rather vague, in most cases this depends on the company in question and their view on personal tattoos.
Plus it also depends on the exact industry where you are job hunting, the creative industry for example, is more likely to be slightly more lenient towards tattoos.
This will be little comfort to Jo Perkins though, a 38-year-old career woman who lost her job at Salisbury FM because a butterfly tattoo on her foot. The company she used to work for has a strict policy where tattoos had to be covered all times. It didn’t matter that Jo had a wealth of experience as a procurement consultant, the chief executive of the company wanted to prove a point.
