When I saw these candies at Michael’s the thought in my head was instantaneous.

Guys… I’ve had these blow mold candies since November and I finally started stripping the paint off of them!

My nose didn’t care for the indoor friendly paint stripper and at 3 am (they were stewing in their cling wrap cocoons) my nose kept dripping and I spent the next two hours de-gunkifying them.

I have to sand and prime before paint, but I’m very excited to get these going!

I only managed to get 11 on clearance last year but I’ll be selling them when they are done.

So back at it with the dollhouse!

I don’t want to create a giant thread because I’m not a huge fan of long posts, unless they’re comics/sequential art. I’ll be tagging these posts #dollhouse if you want to look at them, this is post 3.

Stripping!

Yesterday after letting the Citristrip set on the dollhouse for 2.5 hours I did a test scrape on one side of the roof. It looked pretty good but I also knew I wasn’t ready to take on the whole thing just yet. So back in the wrapper it went with another coat of Citristrip!

This morning I started with the other side of the roof. I wish I’d had a question in mind when I was scraping and that way I could have used the dollhouse like a magic 8 Ball, as I discovered the word YES scrawled on the roof beneath the paint.

Other markings I’ve discovered on the house are the names Alissa Martinez and Matthew, no doubt the previous owners. It’s mine now kiddos! Kick rocks!

When stripping paint remember that entertainment is required. I started listening the audiobook of The Spite House by Johnny Compton, I’m on chapter 8 and am deeply invested.

Back to the dollhouse… Some of the paint peeled off like a dream, the rest not so much.

Not to be discouraged I dug in and scraped, room by room, doing my best to get all the gooey melted paint off. It is smelly and messy work.

Eventually I realized I’d scraped off as much goo as was going to come off in one session. The red paint has come off the smoothest, the Yellow however is peeling up patchy. It’s a wee bit frustrating. The dollhouse has gone from looking abandoned to looking derelict and possibly haunted. Whoops!

I used the last of the Citristrip giving the entire dollhouse another coat and wrapped it up for the night.

More scraping tomorrow, then a scrub down. This is gonna be a process. If you want to follow along let me know and I will tag you.

This 1st edition plastic Imperial Army/ Imperial Guard trooper cleaned up pretty well with Dettol. Added benefit: the cleaner also disolved the superglue joints. As always the paint stripper will not be able to remove glue/paint mix. But overall I am quite happy how it worked. And it confirmed that this early GW plastic is also resistant to Dettol.

Dettol Diaries (part III): Enamel paints

Wanting to explore the possibilities and limits of paint stripping miniatures with Dettol (first installments see https://laboratorium-ix.tumblr.com/post/179754151525/so-this-high-elf-from-the-lord-of-the-rings and https://laboratorium-ix.tumblr.com/post/179801833765/so-the-warriors-of-rohan-came-out-of-their-paint) I rummaged through some of my boxes to come up with miniatures that were painted with different kinds of paints and/ or made from different kinds of material.

This Space Marine from “Space Crusade” by Milton Bradley (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1568/space-crusade if you are curious) was covered with several THICK layers of enamel paint, Revell colours to be precise. And the paint has been on for, I don’t know any more, 15-20 years. I used a lot of Revell in those days, as I had the colours lying around from building military scale models of the same company.

As you can see enamel paint also cleans up quite nicely with this method. Although I admit that cleaning out paint rests from the nooks and crannies is an imperial pain in the ass, but that is a general problem and not to do with the difference between enamel and water-based colours. It should also be noted that the black/ grey areas on the back of the mini and its parts are not paint. Anyway at least not pure paint - it is plastic that melted and fused with the paint because of the modelling glue used (Revell glue does not work like super glue!).

So anyway, conclusions:

1.) Dettol paint stripping works for Revell colours (and presumably also for related enamel modelling paints like Humbrol) on plastic. This of course also means that potentially you can use it to paint strip corresponding scale models (to be tested at some point).

2.) The plastic used by MB for Starquest was not attacked by Dettol, despite having been in there twice for a couple of days total.

So the Warriors of Rohan came out of their paint stripping bath (top pics) and are now relaxing, after some mild scrubbing with a toothbrush, in a bowl with vinegar (bottom). I think they cleaned up well enough. Some scratching out of paint rests maybe, but that’s it.
