A #beautiful #paintedcow, met in #Mysore, #India! The #cows are coloured for #Sankranthi or #HarvestFestival, also known as #Pongol, held 14-18th of January ... Basically a #celebration of the rice harvest ... thanks for the sun, rain and #farmanimals that have helped make the harvest a success in #TamilNadu and #Karnataka. Day two is considered the most important day as it's the day to thank #cattle for all the gifts they give people ... Milk, labour and products made from their urine and manure. Not exactly #vegan but the animals live a kinder life, maybe. 🐮 The #yellow comes from them being bathed in #turmeric. #Horns and #hooves are painted. Apart from the obvious spectacle, the cows are bathed in turmeric water because turmeric has antimicrobial properties and it helps to treat any skin diseases before the summer temperatures start to climb. The horns, and sometimes the hooves, are painted because the paint acts as a fly repellent. Photo by @jasonpeters Some of the festival activities might be considered cruel, like having cows jump over fire, but this also attributed to heat from the fire kills any ticks or flies eggs that have attached themselves to the cow’s legs ... We are sure that there must be easier, less dramatic ways to do this, for the cows, but so many things are excused by #culture and #tradition. 💛 Anyway, we #love this #cow. 😍 #animals #animallovers #vegansofig #veganlife #vegansofinstagram #gorgeous #instagood #potd 🐄 👀 (at Mysore, Karnataka) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBfxQ8hHRWO/?igshid=g1izoiargovx
