OTP kisses under the break. Unedited excerpt from Nettle.
Many months after Lily had come to stay, late at night and certainly far past their bedtime, the two girls sat knee to knee upon the bed. They whispered to each other, foreheads pressed together, not wanting to alert anyone - and certainly not Rachel - that they were still awake.
“Then, there was this one girl who came to visit Jame, and I swear, not only was she tiny, but she was the exact same age as she had been in the photograph Jame had of her,” Lily whispered. “She had to be more than a foot shorter than me, and while she couldn’t have been older than us, she looked the same as she did in the photo with Jame - and he wasn’t much older than we are!”
“Maybe it was an edited photo?” Nettle suggested, though she doubted it. “Or maybe she just gets surgery done to keep herself youthful. I’ve heard people do that in the cities, sometimes.”
“It could have been, but really, Nettle, that’s not fun. Imagine if she were immortal!” Lily grinned. “Perhaps she’s part fae.”
“Fae are storytale beings,” Nettle snickered.
“You are absolutely no fun, Nettle. Sometimes I don’t know how I ever deal with you,” Lily said seriously, albeit with a smile that betrayed her.
“You deal with me because you love me,” Nettle shot back, then paused. She took Lily’s hands in hers, and leaned back so she was no longer pressed to Lily’s forehead. “Lily, I really like you.”
Lily blinked at Nettle, tilting her head. Her lips parted in confusion. Nettle hastily took her hands back, looking at the quilt underneath them.
“I’m sorry,” Nettle began.
“No, I like you too!” Lily grabbed back Nettle’s hands.
“I know what you meant,” Lily smiled, leaning forward and pressing her lips to the other girl’s. She allowed the kiss to linger for a moment before pulling back, resting her forehead against Nettle’s once more. “Finally. I don’t know how you thought I couldn’t tell, or what took you so long, but I wasn’t going to rush you.”
Nettle let out a squeak when Lily’s lips touched hers, but relaxed as it lingered and pouted when it left. “I was worried you didn’t feel the same way,” Nettle muttered.
“I’ve been flirting with you since the day I got back, how could you not tell?” Lily laughed, tilting her head to kiss Nettle again. “Not to mention that you were always staring at me, not so subtly, and did you really think that I just naturally move my hips like that when I walk? It was for you, Nettle.”
“Oh.” Nettle ducked her head. “I didn’t realize.”
“I know, silly,” Lily smiled. “Stop being so bashful, you’re making me want to kiss you again, now that I can.”
“You can kiss me again,” Nettle blurted. “I mean, if you want. You don’t have to. But I liked it. If you would like to, you can. I’d like it if you wanted to. I mean-”
Lily cut her off with a kiss. “I want to. Does this mean we’re together now?”
“We’re sitting on the be-”
“Oh. Yes, I guess so.” Nettle nodded. “I don’t think we should tell anyone, though. Not yet, at least...”
“That’s probably best. We don’t want them thinking we’re going to be doing things and try to put us in separate bedrooms. We won’t be doing things, of course, except kissing, but people from the villages aren’t as accepting of teenage sexuality as people in the cities, so they’ll be inclined to think we would and try to keep it from happening...”
“I don’t want to do anything except kiss you and listen to your heartbeat as we sleep,” Nettle whispered, voice nearly inaudible by the end of her sentence.
“That can be arranged,” Lily smirked, “after all, we already wake up tangled together.”
