Is Gazavetters a scam? I keep getting told it is and when I ask about it I just get attacked so I do assume it is, bc they wouldn't attack me if they were real

But I'm still just unsure

And if they are a scam could you provide a better organization?

Yes, I promise, they are all scams. It drives me nuts when people here, wanting to avoid being wrong, say shit like “well i think 90% of them are probably scams” because no, babe, THEY ARE ALL SCAMS.

I swear to you on my collectors edition copy of The Iliad and Odyssey, even the people saying “no this one DEFINITELY has a starving dying baby, pinky promise!” are lying to you. They are in on the scam and donating to them, more often than not, means your money is going to human trafficking. Real human trafficking, not just people working in the sex trade.

So I've sent an ask to just about every supposed major "Gaza vetter" and none of them have answered what their vetting process is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They have also ignored other people asking them this question. This should be a pretty easy question to answer, no?

Again, please just donate to charity. These people are stealing your money.

idk if anyone whos following me has experienced the sudden flood of scam bots mentioning you and several other random people in posts asking for donations, but i sure have.

i got tagged in the replies of a post which had 4000 notes but almost all of them were like 5 different bots spamming mentions in the replies. definitely not suspicious at all...

anyway, just making my point that these are Scams, and if you dont want to be tagged in them, be sure to go into your settings and change who can mention you on each blog you have.

Mobile: settings wheel > account settings > mentions > tap blog of choice > dropdown

Desktop: blog settings > scroll down to mentions > click the dropdown

"everyone can mention me" is the culprit here i do believe, so turn that shit off. and do this with ALL your blogs, i got tagged on my art blog as well.

Nobody thinks it's weird how every Palestinian donation blog has:

The same exact story, name, writing, amount of children.

Internet despite everything being destroyed.

Has a GoFundMe even tho it doesn't work in that area.

Spams random blogs, posts, tags sometimes multiple times.

On the site where everyone is broke/unemployed/minors.

Newly made blog.

Let's be clear.

If a random user you never interacted with pop ups asking and begging for money.

If this user keeps harassing you and others over and over.

It's a spam.

It's a scam.

Maybe 1 out of 100 could be legit, but most is people trying to fraud you.

The obvious bot behavior tells you everything.

Most messages are a copy paste of each others, the pics are stolen from news websites, the beneficiaries of the crowdfunding are people living in the US or in Europe. GFM doesn't work in Israel/Palestine, the transaction tooks months and most banks are currently blocking money movements to Israel and Palestine. Even if one of them is legit, what makes you think that a third party that isn't mentioned anywhere in the post and you don't know would actually give the whole lot of money to the person in need?

And also... Why the fuck choosing tumblr? A obscure indie social media that does not have the numbers, the visibility or the money flux of Tiktok or Instagram? Why they have to harass random people on tumblr and not Instagram influences or Tiktokers?

Easy peasy:

Instagram filters spammy messages

Tiktok does the same (as far I remember, I haven't used it for a while)

Twitter is full of Elon Musk and Maga bots, so it's not their target

Bluesky have a strong anti-spam policy

Instagram and Tiktok would require a bigger effort into posting images and videos, so the scammer have to search/edit/AI generate the right content every time, while tumblr doesn't require to build a consistent public imagine for their Gaza/Palestine persona.

Tumblr is infamously known for the proficiency of bots and for the ineffective staff menagement.

It's easier for a person with malicious intentions to perpetrate their schemes here.

Protect yourself.

Don't fall for this.

Donate to reputed charities instead.

to the constant barrage of scam accounts: if you want your scam accounts to stay up longer, stop sending me your scams. i don't care about your sob stories. i don't care what politically relevant words you say at me. stop trying to get me to give you money.

to people who don't know: if you get a message from someone saying they're from insert politically relevant region here (currently palestine/gaza) and they totally desperately need your money: it is a scam. don't give them money. don't reblog their posts. surprise surprise, people will go on the internet and lie to your face. report them, block them, move on. "oh but they're vetted!!!" guess what: the "vetter" is also a scammer, likely run by the same people who run the scam accounts. don't fall for it. if you actually want to help, donate to actual charities.

I just checked the #palestine tag sorted by latest post and...

No exaggeration over 9/10 posts are either gofundme scammers posting their scripts or propalestinians blogging the asks of said scammers and saying "I gotchu fam".

I knew the scambots were a problem but I didn't realize it was THAT prolific.

If i were a propal activist I would be pissed about this drowning out actual content on the topic. I'm not a propal activist and I'm still pissed off. Palestinians deserve better than to have their tumblr tag taken over by scambots trying to take advantage of the sensitivities of propal leftists on this website to make a quick buck...and it seems to be working, too.

If I didn't have a sense of ethics to live by I'd put serious thought into joining in. Seems real easy to separate these people from their money. Just as susceptible to grifters as the boomer MAGA crowd and this makes me sad ngl.

you guys realize that majority of these palestinian donation dms and posts are scams right? no one in gaza right now (which is a warzone with little electricity and internet) is sitting down in front of a computer asking teenagers for money on tumblr all day- especially if their family member(s) is dying like these messages always state. these people are fighting for their lives dodging bombs. you're giving money to selfish opportunistic scumbags taking advantage of the situation to make a profit. common sense, people. please.
