“Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise,” - Cate Blanchett. 🌟 🌟 🌟 This week’s #femalefilmmakerfriday feature is the Women of Cannes. 82 women held a red carpet protest at Cannes - linking arms in solidarity, and led by this year’s jury president, Cate Blanchett, and director Agnes Varda. The 82 women represent the 82 female directed films (including male-female director duos) that premiered at Cannes (compared to 1,645 films by men). French movement 5050x2020 organized the protest, calling for 50/50 gender equality in the French film industry by 2020. • • • • • Women of color also took to the carpet this week. 16 Black actresses held hands in a stand against racism in French cinema. Actress Aïssa Maïga led the charge and was joined by Cannes Jury Member Khadja Nin. The 16 actresses are featured in a book, Black Is Not My Job, which is a collection of real life anecdotes of black french actresses. • • • • Finally, let’s show actress and jury member Kristen Stewart some love. Kristen challenged the absurd Cannes dress code for women by removing her heels on the red carpet and going barefoot at Cannes. Following this act, Kristen has worn flats to the festival, violating an absurd dress code rule instituted in 2015 (that’s so recent, and completely insane!). Props to all these awesome women of film and thank you for bringing attention to gender and racial inequality 🙏🏽🎥👭👭👭🙅🏽♀️👠 #cannes #cannes2018 #cannesfilmfestival #womenofcannes #cannesjury2018 #cateblanchett #avaduvernay #leaseydoux #khadjanin #kristenstewart #agnesvarda #palmdor #82 #5050x2020 #frenchfilm #frenchcinema #blackfrenchactresses #aissamaiga #pattyjenkins #sofiaboutella #marioncotillard #janefonda #salmahayek #haifaaalmansour #janecampion #femalefilmmakers #genderequality #racialequality (at Cannes Film Festival)
