We hiked thru this forest habitat for hours. Burned trees, dead trees, toppled trees, baby trees, old trees, living trees, scarred trees, #palmfrond... Following the #GreenTrail, we wound our way thru waving fields of straw grass and wildflowers listening to Scrub Jays calling from the sparse trees they were so well hidden in. We even hiked thru swampy marsh without getting our feet wet. Neither of us were really prepared for this adventure, both of us were in flip-flops lol. Nobody packed any bottled water... You might think this is just a palm frond a little worn around the edges, which is what I thought when I first saw it. What’s the big deal? But then I noticed how the individual leaves make an intricate pattern along the spine, how the structure looks as complicated yet as natural as the most complex of weavings, or as if a master seamstress had sewn a seam with such care that though it is there (like a hidden zipper) you don’t see it. Just a palm frond? Earlier this week the wind blew this palm frond onto the grass in front of one of the houses in the neighborhood, and rain overnight left it filled with water. It looks almost like a canoe, one that needs to be bailed out before setting sail in the new year.
