Every Asian name is nationally specific. Tanaka is definitely Japanese. Kim is definitely Korean. Wong is definitely Chinese. How can you say this characterization (representing Pan-Asia) with a name like Wong?

Hi! I'm writing a fictional fantasy world. A lot of the things I'm writing are obviously inspired by real cultures and religions, etc, and I wondered what your opinion is on mixing influences? Not as in creating a pan-Asia that is a mish mash of east asian cultures... but for example - a nation of people who are black, but the climate where they live is kinda cold scandinavian, and their culture and society inspired by imperial China. Mixing everything completely. Would this be offensive?
Fantasy World & Influences between Cultures
I don’t think it’s bad on its face—it does have a bit of A:tlA sound to it, which isn’t necessarily bad, so long as they don’t go blending cultures willy-nilly.
Though not completely opposed to it, one needs to avoiding treating people and their cultures like an open buffet. Some parts of cultural traditions stem from things like the land/geography. Some of it comes from history, including things like colonization. Some part of cultural traditions also come from influences from surrounding areas or the influx of ideas from different people groups immigrating in.
To try and divorce all of these things into phenotype/geography/culture and then re-distribute can come off as strange. I’d especially avoid blending cultures so one doesn’t have to bother getting it right since it’s “fantasy.”
Respecting the real people and the cultures you’re basing your worlds off of is always essential.
