Suspected Somali Islamist militant group, Al-Shabaab, beheaded three people and torched several houses in the latest overnight attacks in Kenya’s coastal region of Lamu.

Kenyan Coast Regional Police Commander Larry Kieng confirmed the attack at Maleli on Friday, saying security officers are pursuing the attackers.

The school was still smouldering when the children came back from the forest. They had hidden in the trees, their teacher said, because they knew an attack was coming.

“We spent all night in the bush,” Rosemary Temba Siekisa said as she surveyed the charred remains of her classroom. Half-burnt children’s drawings still adorned the walls. The tin roof had fallen in and the blackened beams glowed orange in the breeze. “We were all too scared to sleep,” she said.

At least 80 people have been killed in unexplained attacks on Kenya’s northern coast, straining age-old fault lines between Swahili Muslims and their Christian minority neighbours.

The Islamist militants al-Shabaab admitted carrying out at least three night raids, which have targeted mostly Christian communities on the mainland, close to the Lamu peninsula. The group said it was vengeance for Kenya’s operations in Somalia. (Read more...)
