Pang Attack — Tears for the Wave (Independiente)

“Low Born Man” sidles into view like a lost Roxy Music track , cool, dispassionate, chilled on the surface but unruly underneath. A lurching bassline argues hidden violence, while swelling strings and soft crooner vocals suggest a polished repose. The cut pulses and looms and beckons, its story of income inequality embellished with the “ahs” and “oohs” of romantic pop. It’s the lead cut from Pang Attack’s second full-length, and a stunner, the clear stand-out in this Montreal trio’s dream pop epic.

Pang Attack’s singer, Alex Hackett, is well-known among Montreal scenesters, a 20-year veteran of bands including KTL, Femme Generation and TV Erased: he has also collaborated with Peter Holmström of The Dandy Warhols. His Pang Attack started as a home recording project in the early teens. He made two EPs solo before bringing on Yann Geoffroy (Kill the Lights) on drums and David Clark on bass. 

Hackett’s bedroom taper side comes through in fuzzy, acoustic cuts like “Can’t Make the Fates Like You” and finger-picked “Appalachian Wave,” but the best cuts veer closer to baroque Brit pop, with shades of Pulp, Robyn Hitchcock and Bryan Ferry. “Rosalynne,” for instance, has the same stylish propulsion as “Low-Born Man,” anchored by Clark’s nattering bass and Geoffroy’s cymbal slashing exclamation points. It’s a track poised on the knife edge of yearning and disillusion, wanting love but not really expecting it. It climaxes in angsty yelps and moans, a crescendo of romantic guitar pop sounds that nonetheless retains its reserve.

The whole album is enjoyable but these two songs—“Low-Born Man” and “Rosalynne”—make you wonder why you never heard of Pang Attack before. This is music for stadiums, not CDRs, and hardly anyone seems to know about it.

In the most vivid track of the EP, the closer “Gulag” feels as if cold waves are crashing over your head. A page taken from Sigur Rós/Jónsi Birgisson’s book of blooming sounds, “Gulag” beings with an acoustic guitar and skittery electronic elements before the rest of Pang Attack’s soundscape folds over you.
