The Panhellenic Association at the University of Michigan is home to 18 chapters, all full of incredible women. We hope you will find a home in one of them!
Sorority Recruitment Tips
It’s about that time of year again! Sorority recruitment starts in about a month at a lot of schools, so I thought I could put together a list of tips for y’all who are about to go through!
Be Yourself- I cannot stress this enough. If you want to like the sorority you join, be yourself during recruitment. If you fake it and join a sorority and don’t like it after, it’s kind of on you for not being authentic. Yes, sororities will absolutely put their best face forward during recruitment, but even so every house has a different vibe and a different personality. If you don’t like a house during Recruitment, you probably won’t like them after.
Don’t join a house because they’re a “top” house- Let’s be real. At OU, the top 5 houses have been the same for the past 50 years. But you know what? Those numbers are based SOLELY off of recruitment numbers. Campus involvement isn’t taken into consideration, or philanthropy work, or volunteering, or GPA, or anything else. It’s just about how many girls want to go back to that house during recruitment, and they usually want to go back because they know it’s ranked highly. Again, focus on the connections you make with the girls who are recruiting you. Trust your instincts and don’t let other people’s experiences and opinions influence your own.
What to wear, what to wear?- Of course, be true to your style, but don’t opt for that mini skirt that looks like you’re about to hit a frat house. You aren’t looking to impress boys during recruitment. Wear something that you’re comfortable in and feel good in, but also show that you can represent the chapter well. Look polished and put together. Use your accessories to highlight your style! For knowing what to wear each day, go through your recruitment guide! It should give you guidelines because formal recruitment gets dressier as you go on!
Dress smart- Formal recruitment in the fall is exhausting and, if you’re in the South, HOT. Try to wear something that you won’t overheat in and won’t stick to you when you’re sweaty from running from North Greek to South Greek in 10 minutes flat. I found dresses to be an easy and fashionable way to stay cool, plus they’re easy to accessorize!
Things to keep in your bag- WATER. Let me say it again for the people in the back. WATER. Chapstick, oil blotting sheets, a mini fan, a snack, pencil and paper for note taking (trust me. When you visit 11 houses in one day you will forget things. Write stuff down!), touch-up makeup, bandaids (for blisters), mints (NO GUM!), flip flops for when you need to get from one house to another quickly, bobby pins
Get as many Rec letters as possible- Houses will choose girls who have recommendation letters from alumni over girls who don’t. Having someone vouch for you is a big deal. Try to find alumni from the school you are rushing at. If anyone needs a Rec Letter for oklahomaalphaphi, hit me up.
General rule- Don’t take ANYTHING from the house. We can get fined for that. No napkins, no drinks, no empty cups, nothing. Nada.
It's been a really hard week but I hope that I can become a stronger person because of it. Rejection can be crippling if you let it so I'm just going to try to stay positive. It's hard to basically be told that you aren't good enough and feel like you can't find your place. I know that eventually I'll find myself and be comfortable in my own skin but for now I think I just need some time for myself so that I can build up my own positive body image.

Hey GMU Freshmen!
Welcome to college. If any of you are interested in exploring the possibility of joining a campus organization, I'd be happy to talk with you.
I can specifically advise you on Panhellenic Recruitment, which is a great opportunity to find your home away from home in one of our fantastic sororities.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Recruitment 2012 Day: 4
Last night was emotional and hard for me. Not only did I fall in love with two different chapters again, but I also told my dad about my plan to rush....thru an email haha.
Last night I met with four different sororities and I really liked three of them, but I could only choose two that I liked. I'm really nervous about tonight to see if I'm going to get the ones I wanted to get invited back too.
I'm not too worried about small talk anymore because the two I picked I can really connect with so I don't think I'll be struggling to come up with anything to say. I hope I can open up and really show my true personality tonight!
Regardless though I'm so glad I decided to go thru this process and see what Greek life is all about. Thank you to the people who pushed me to follow thru with recruitment.
