Thank you so much, friend! I love you and I hope you’re doing well.
25. Favorite memory? I feel like I’ve shared this a bunch now, but it’s still true! I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Attack Disorder my sophomore year of college. I got help really fast which was great, but despite therapists and psychiatrists, we couldn’t get any medications that really helped for the next four years. That means the rest of my college years were spend having 4-5 panic attacks a day while somehow managing to make (mostly) straight As and keep my scholarships so I could stay in school. I learned a lot and made great friends, but it hurt like hell. Then, last year of school in my Big Final English Thesis Class, my professor decided that he didn’t believe in mental illnesses. He called my accommodations “unfair” and “lazy.” I had to take him up against the head of the department on ADA violations. And he didn’t let me know until 3 days before graduation if I was actually going to pass the class and get to walk. Luckily, I worked my butt off and I did. The day of was amazing. My best friends from high school surprised me at the ceremony along with my boyfriend and parents. My other professors, some I hadn’t had in years, all came up to hug and congratulate me. I felt so successful and relieved and just happy beyond belief!
50. Talk about something you’re passionate about. This is a holy tenant of librarianship: Let People Read What They Want. If I’m talking to a kid interested in comic books, fantastic! I want them to read comic books. When they get really interested in a character, then maybe we can start talking about reading full-length novels about that person or transitioning to more sophisticated graphic novels. But maybe they’re life is crazy hectic and they just want to relax and see the good guys win. That’s worth experiencing too. If I’m talking to an adult who likes to read YA fiction, that’s totally fine! A lot of those books have really relatable themes and characters and, hey, I’m ace; I don’t want to read about explicit sex in adult fantasy books either! You only read biographies? Cool, here’s the newest one by a great author! You only read about pop stars? That’s sweet, here’s a bunch of books I think you might like. I recommended a bunch of stuff to you and you hated all of them? Okay, great! I’m glad you’re figuring out what you don’t like. Can you let me know so I can steer you in better directions? I feel like there is media out there for everyone: books, audiobooks, fanfiction, picture books, books without words. You just have to find what you’re into. And no one should EVER be able to shame you for what you do (or do not) what to read.
65. Favorite fruit? I love love love raspberries! They are such a treat for me partly because they are really expensive where I live and partly because my parents hate them so I never got to eat them growing up, but I love that they’re so sweet and tart at the same time. I love feeling the separate little bobbles get smushed on my tongue as I enjoy them. I love washing them and seeing their little cups fill up with water like teacups for fairies.
Roommate, finding me on the floor: tf is you doin son?
Me, startled awake: well I was having a panic attack and I was cold, so I put on every jacket I have and curled up in a blanket ball on the floor and passed out
Roommate: aight, just turn the tv down when you feel better
Me, still confused: yeah I wish I could make Jerry Seinfeld shut up too
