There aren’t enough DQ5 headcanons so I’m going to make some:
The hero, who shall henceforth be called Abel, is dyslexic
Here, let me explain. Abel wasn’t able to read at age 6, while most children are able, if poorly, by age 4. If you go up to a sign during the prologue, you will get a text box saying: “It looks like it might be some kind of warning sign, but Abel hasn’t learned how to read yet.”
Pankraz truly cared about his child, so neglect isn’t the reason Abel learned so late. And if Pankraz couldn’t do it, why didn’t Sancho? My guess is that they were trying to teach him, but Abel just didn’t understand what was on the page.
Harry did eventually teach him at the slave camp, though, as somewhat of a “sorry I’m the reason your father is dead and we’re both condemned to servitude”.
What do you think?

Dads of Dragon Quest, we salute you! Happy Father's Day!
