15) five most influential books over your lifetime
Hmm, this is a hard one! I’ve read a lot over the years, but I can’t quite say that anything I’ve read has had a super huge influence on me past fandom stuff...
I guess my favorite books would have to be The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Stranger, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow, and Bridge to Terabithia.
Dorian Gray is just...wow. I just absolutely love it, but I can never seem to find the words to describe why. Everything about it just clicks into place for me. Gothic horror, drama, suspense, wonderful prose, ugh. So good.
I fucking hate The Stranger. In fact, I utterly despise it and thinking about that novel makes me want to punch a hole in my bedroom wall. Never has a book pissed me off so much with its prose, characters, etc. The thing is, I completely understand the philosophical meaning behind the book. That doesn’t mean that I enjoyed it, though. Whenever I rate books, I usually use this one for “on a scale of worst to best” with The Stranger being the worst.
Man, do I love me some questioning of the humanity of artificial intelligence, so it should come as no surprise that I loved Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It’s so interesting that we have a lot of the same thoughts regarding the humanity of AI that people did back in the 1960s. And for the record, I don’t like Blade Runner.
The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow is a republished version of the diary of Opal Whiteley, originally published in 1920. As a young child, I was exposed to a children’s edition of her diary. I could never remember the girl’s name who was featured in it and it remained a mystery for over ten years until I found this music video. I’m almost a little sad that that mystery has been solved, but Opal is an incredibly fascinating person to read about, even though there’s not much info on her - definitely go out of your way to learn more about her.
And finally, Bridge to Terabitihia, thank you for breaking my heart as a child and rudely awakening me to the fact that, yes, important characters can die.
12) dog person or cat person?
Dogs, definitely! I like cats, but I’m also highly allergic to them, so I can never own one...
30) pick one of your favorite quotes.
"I write for the same reason I breathe - because if I didn't, I would die." - Isaac Asimov
