FNM Legacy @Demospel - 01/04
Friday FNM was april's fool and I decided to bring with me a bit of a joke deck. It's based on Octavia, Living thesis which I also built as a DC commander deck.
The premises is that you want shitloads of cantrips and spells, so Land Grant is definitely a must. My list is based off what I saw on 90s mtg stream and a list I found on mtgtop8. I went for sultai and 7 cards for the witherbloom combo which has now become my signature at FNM.
0-2 Maverick
Risky keep with an Underground sea not knowing what my opponent was on. He had the wasteland, I did not see any lands, we swiftly went to game 2. Game 2 was super long and after he exiled pieces of my graveyard multiple times, I manage to stabilize and put a grist on the battlefield which provides me with a generous amount of 1/1 blockers for his creatures. I finally put an Octavia on the battlefield but I do not manage to get any other cantrips to turn them insects in 8/8s and he loops wastelands in my duals so I'm basically out of lands. I die after his mum protects his creatures to attack through my blue creature.
2-0 Dream halls
I was not the only one memeing for april's fool but my oponent stumbled both games and nothing happened really.
0-2 Arena Nic Fit
I do not remember what happened but game 1, he accumulated a lot of advantage through planeswalkers and other creatures at which point I could not come back. Game 2 I remember making mistakes tapping my mana at a point where a Questing Beast was in the graveyard which I could have ranimated. The next turn I manage to pull the Wither+Chain combo but he has an answer for the dude. I chain 2 of his creatures and revive a Elder Gargaroth which he directly removes from the battlefield. He has a Meren on board which pulls a lot of weight and he finally burries me in card advantage for the win.
Takeways
I was against a lot of creature matchups and I tailored my deck against combo this time. I found that although Octavia cannot be answered, I often was empty handed when I played her and lacked critters to transfrom so she was not a slamdunk bomb. I always wanted to find a Strix when I played her so maybe I should have more. 2 Chain was too little to consitently go for that combo if it was required so I'm not sure it was a good complement to Octavia. Sedgemoor witch did not show her true potential as I never comboed and never flustersormed with her on the battlefield. She also arrives a little late in my current build. I did not play red as I thought it was too heavy on the manabase but it might help with pyroclasm and young pyromancers. I do not think I will resleve Octavia anytime soon given all the limitations in deck building and Endurance being so strong against my strategy.
