While Cyrus prefers to take pictures of landscapes and objects, sometimes he photographs people. Very often, it’s of strangers who caught his eye. He never asks permission. Unless he has a very specific idea in mind, he doesn’t pose people and prefers his shots to be taken candidly, in the moment. Anyone he spends enough time around eventually ends up in his archives.

If you go through his flickr, Thomas pops up fairly frequently, until he doesn’t. Lots of pictures of Jay appear in recent months, but she is not photogenic and only one or two pictures of her have ever been finished. He has a few pictures of Callisto, of their hands and with their fireworks. There are so very many pictures of Cleo, some nice and some of her being a weirdo. He likes to experiment with settings and techniques by taking pictures of her. He even has a small handful of experimental self portraits.

Starter for @papiermains Jay had been in the library for… she'd say hours but time was a construct for human activity so they could feel like everything mattered; all she could remember to give her any frame of reference was when she leaves the building during closing time and then she was back right as it opened. As it was, the ability to rent books meant Jay was staying up later than normal to read. She was rather tired. 

So, naturally, when she walked into the library, Jay was a little out of it. Not a lot, but just enough to realize she had written half a note in a book ten minutes after doing so. It wasn’t even the right book, for gods sakes! But she had to- wanted to finish the half-baked concept in her head. So she kept trying to make her eyes focus on the words and keep pages from blurring together. 

Several hours later found her obsessively pouring over books. Frequent breaks to walk around, get some soda and wake herself up a little more saw her through the early morning hours and fused electric, hyper-focused energy into her body. (The 5-hour energy she had taken probably didn’t help. Jay could swear she was vibrating.) 

The teen glanced up, pencil between her teeth and stretched. She needed another book. The chair scratched on the carpet, catching on the woven loops and Jay scolded, "Don’t do that!", before getting up. It would be here, on this shelf, wouldn’t it? But the book was not. She checked the shelves, checked the bin, checked everywhere and it was still nowhere to be found. Jay stalked over to the nearest librarian. "Hey, do you know where the Latin books are?"

“Cleo was given to me when I was in first grade. It wasn’t a special day. I remember my mother gave me a talk about responsibility on the way home from school. She sounded so serious; I thought I was in trouble. When we got there, Cleo was in a carrier on the coffee table. She was yelling, so loudly.” Cyrus laughs a little. “She hated that carrier. Still does. My mother took her out and handed her to me. She couldn’t have been much bigger than this,” he cups his hands, about the size of a small kitten, “but I had never held a cat before, so she felt huge.” He’s smiling as he speaks. “She kept squirming; she wanted to climb me, and I couldn’t figure out how to stop her. She made it to my head and scratched my neck a little on the way there. My mother had to get her off of me.”  He shakes his head a bit.

“For the next three weeks, she was all I cared about. I played with her constantly. I wasn’t allowed near her litter box, but I was in charge of feeding her every night. I used to lay next to her food bowl while she ate. And…” he rubs his neck self-consciously, embarrassed to admit, “I talked to her a lot. Cleo knows all my secrets.” He makes a small noise, a faint laugh hidden in a breath.

“Her full name is Cleopatra—I was learning about Egypt for the first time—but everyone has always called her Cleo.”

By the look on Cyrus’s face, the idea has never even remotely occurred to him. He thinks about it for a few moments, trying to determine if he has even the vaguest thought resembling opinion on nail polish. In the end, he just shrugs. “Some people wear it. I don’t.“
