Loving Lately... Papirmasse
Happy June everyone! I hope you enjoyed your weekend and got up to some fun and interesting things, and had good good days all around!
For today's Loving Lately it's my pleasure to introduce you to Papirmasse, the affordable art subscription. My goal in writing this blog is to introduce you to something new and unexpected, and Papirmasse founder Kirsten McCrea (who you may remember from my City of Craft roundup) does just that. Launched in 2008, Papirmasse delivers a monthly dose of inspiration straight to your mailbox, and I'm not talking email. For $5 a month, you receive a real print, which features a work of original art on one side, and a written piece on the other. It's like a beautiful union of creative expression.
Called "a magazine, work of art, and social experiment all rolled into one", Papirmasse wants you to get excited about work well travelled, and open your eyes to fresh landscapes, graffiti inspired portraits, illustrations, short stories, essays and poems and maybe, just maybe, encourage to take down that old poster from university and replace it with something different and unique. Their mandate is to start a "new generation of art collectors by making art accesible for all" which is something I can get behind. Plus, just think of the sweet gallery wall you could put together with all this art sliding under your door every month! Thanks for the awesome service, Kirsten!
Artists clockwise from top: JP King, Terrence Payne & Winnie Truong.

Expozine Hustle!
As we are a day from Expozine in Montreal I wanted to highlight some of the awesome projects that I am excited to see for the first time. One of my favorite collage artists, Carl David Ruttan, has just recently released a book called Printoptik with Maison Kasini, one of my favorite Galleries. His miniature collages are digitally enlarged and the vivid detail in his found materials makes this a very unique body of collages.
Papirmasse will be debuting their 2011 Folio, which collects all the amazing issues of this incredible mail-art monthly that published a collage and story of mine back in Issue #14. It is also the perfect time to renew your subscription, or even subscribe for the first time!
I am so excited to see the recent debut from Trapshot Archives. Four new titles that range from art to poetry to fiction, all well produced and stunning in design. I can't wait to get my hands on some copies of these!
Grace: A Graphic Novel, was recently released by Madelaine Richards and her brother. Sadly I was in the Yukon when it launched, but I am thrilled to see it now! After many moons in artful pursuit, the siblings Richards have crafted a modern day fable, woven of fashionista wishes and run away opportunities. Grace is truly a design lover's dream comic: Unparalleled grand & colorful galas, it's a story about the downside of vanity & obsession.
I am also really thrilled to see the latest issue of Four Minutes to Midnight which celebrates Ten Years of Expozine! And lastly, I can't wait to see all the things I never expected to see, the mini-zines, posters, photocopies, broadsheets, postcards, and other nifty things!
Tourist Book Report #12- Papirmasse is a subscription that delivers a print with art on the front and writing back to subscribers' mailboxes every month for a mere $5 per month. Founded by Montreal-based artist Kirsten McCrea in 2008 and produced with the support of Maison Kasini, Papirmasse showcases an original image on archival paper by a fresh new artist each month. Since the art dictates the format, Papirmasse can range from being a 5” x 7” accordion folded booklet, to a 6” x 9” reversible book folded down from a single huge sheet of paper, to an 18” x 24” double-sided poster to beyond. It's an awesome endeavor and the issues are beautiful; you'd basically be a fool to pass up on scoring art this inexpensive!
from Papirmasse Interview with Jp King. This is my shameless self-promotion for the upcoming issue of Papirmasse. I have done both the art and writing and following this above link will bring you to an interview in which I talk about overworking under sleep deprivation.
