Axel was well aware that Isaac needed a distraction, and what distraction had served either one of them better than a trip outside the gates? It was where they both felt most alive, where they could fall into step side by side and feel a sense of normalcy in a world that made no sense. He was hesitant to propose the idea, though; to drag Isaac out on a run after what had happened only some twenty-four hours before. Would a supply run really snap him out of it, help him feel better, help him return to himself? Or would it just serve as a reminder of lives he’d had to take in the name of survival?
It seemed he wasn’t the only one with the idea of attempting to slip back into normalcy, to distract their minds from the hell and hardships they’d seen, for Isaac had come knocking at his door just as Axel was getting ready to go. All that needed to be exchanged as a simple nod and a grab of their packs before they were outside the gates and trudging along with nothing but the stamp of their boots for company.
The cool morning air was a comfort. The storms had blown through, leaving the morning kissed with damp grass and warm sunlight breaking through fluffy clouds. It made it seem like the horrors of yesterday couldn’t have possibly occurred, that blood never truly stained their hands.
It was strangely easy to pretend it had never happened, strangely simple to fall into step with his friend and treat today like any other day. Maybe that was what they both needed.
A hand reached out to nudge Isaac’s shoulder, playful. “How about we put your spidey-skills to the test,” he remarked, jerking a thumb towards a building that they hadn’t been able to break into last time around. But there was a broken window at the second story - which Isaac would undoubtedly have no trouble reaching. What resided behind locked doors had to be something good after all.
