Abel brushed out Isabella's hair after her shower and looked at the TV screen. They were watching Thor: Ragnork for the fifth time in a row, Issy’s choice, when Isabella spoke.
"Dad?"
"Yes, love?"
"Do you miss mom?" That made him paused and put her hairbrush down. "Because I miss her a lot and I know we don't talk about her." He swallowed hard as he watched her turned around and faced him after he paused the movie. Abel opened up his arms for her and wrapped them around her once she was in his arms.
"Have I told you the story when I met your mom?" Isabella shook her head as she gotten comfortable in his arms and looked up at him. "Do you want to know?" She nodded as she gotten relaxed.
"Well, I met her when we were juniors in college. She was a social work major and I was an English major. She came into the Tutoring center that we had on campus. I was the only one working that day. So I helped her with her midterm and told her what she needed to do to correct it and whatnot. By the end of the session, she invited me to this party that was happening that night. Well, I got food poisoning from my all time favorite Chinese restaurant in LA. So instead of going to the party, your mom came over and she helped me get better." He chewed on his inner cheek and swallowed some. "We dated before she met your biological dad, but we didn't date long. We decided that it would be better if we were friends instead." He paused a bit as he carefully formed the words in his head since his mind was going a mile a minute.
"When she told me that she was pregnant with you and asked me to be your godfather, I knew that I couldn't say no, she had this huge impact in my life and we loved each other so it was the right thing to do. I was happy for her and I knew that she could raise you by herself and you guys had me." Isabella shifted in his arms as she sat up on his lap, letting him know to continue. "I remember holding you for the first time, thinking, how lucky I am that I got to be a Godfather to the most precious thing in the world." He paused a bit as he licked his lips and tried not to cry when he thought about the day in April. He closed his eyes and felt a tear roll down his cheek. "When I got the call that I needed to get out to LA soon as possible, I threw a bunch of clothes together, comic books, etc, including the teddy bear she got for me when we were dating. I was thinking, please dont let Michelle leave until I get there and be by her side and be there for you." He felt Isabella wipe the tear and reopened up his eyes.
"When I arrived, I remembered you running pass your grandparents; towards me and jumped into my arms. I remember that you were holding on so tight, like you didnt want to let go. You actually stayed by me despite having people try to pull you away from me." He brushed some of her hair away from her face. "To answer your question, I miss your mom, a lot. There hasn’t been a day that goes by where I don't think about her or what crazy Halloween costume she'll be wearing this year." Isabella laughed a little and nodded. "I'm glad that I have you in my life."
Once he was done, Issy stood up and hugged him. "Im glad that you're going to be my dad and Im glad you're in my life." Abel wrapped his arms around her and returned the hug. "Me too squirt, me too." He glanced at the time, knowing it was late and she needed to go to bed. “How about you go and get ready for bed and I’ll come in there and read you a bedtime story, alright?” Isabella nodded before she went to tell her grandparents' goodnight before she headed into her room. Abel sighed and went to read his daughter until she passed out.
