The Eye of the Storm // Luke
Becky had been in the hospital for what felt like forever (although it was really only three days), but she had barely had anyone for company, and she was starting to really resent her supposed best friend and cousin. She hadn't even reached out at all. Her mother was dead, and she and her brother were in the hospital and Clare couldn't even make time to come and see her. It was absolutely unacceptable and any doubts of her and Luke's plan went out the window. She had three days and she couldn't even be bothered. She still was having trouble believing that her mom was actually gone--a large part of her was still thinking that the woman was in Florida like their father had said. She was left with so many questions and no answers...and she was starting to get fed up. She also hadn't seen her brother since the accident, and every time she asked about him she was given a non answer and it was worrying. Becky looked up when she heard a knock at the door and her face lit up when she saw her brother standing there. It had been hell not knowing if he was okay or if he was okay. "Luke," she said, wishing she could get out of the bed, but her head still hurt and her ribs hurt whenever she moved. "You're okay," she said, "You...are okay...right?"
Luke "You're welcome to walk around the area once you feel up to it," the nurse spoke. Luke had been tossing in turning in his hospital bed, itching for the chance for a change of something. Dallas and Tori had already visited him, but he still hadn't found the one person he wanted to see: Becky. Luke rested his entire body weight on his hands, struggling to lift himself up. Had he always been this helpless. Luke pushed through the pain that was overwhelming his body and forced himself with a strong push onto his feet. He struggled to the reception desk and was greeted with a small smile from the woman. "Rebecca Baker. Is she on this floor?" She nodded, pointing to the room two door down from her. "Your father thought it be best if you healed separately, but Ms. Baker should be awake now," the women explained. Luke immediately rolled his eyes as he pushed onto the room. This was obviously something their father would do. Luke should have suspected it from the beginning. He knocked softly on the door, smiling once he saw his sister, but the smile quickly faded remembering why his sister was here. "Hey Becks," he greeted. He moved a chair towards the bed. "Just a couple of bruises. Nothing new," he shrugged. "How are you though? I'm so sorry, Becky."
Becky was glad she had her computer with her since she didn't really enjoy getting up and moving around, not that the doctors had entirely banned her from doing it--they encouraged her to take it easy but to move around, but it was just too hard right now for her to enjoy doing more than getting up for a few minutes, so she had been bedridden for the most part. That had given her a lot of time to think things through, and she just...kept thinking about how worried she was about Luke and about their mother. She couldn't get her mother out of her mind. How had she died of an overdose? She couldn't even remember her mom taking much of anything, ever. So how had this happened? What didn't she know? What didn't Luke know? Since he had been closer to their mother than her she would have looked to him for answers, but he had been just as surprised. So...obviously they were both missing something. She watched as Luke moved a chair and sat down next to her. "I'm glad you're okay," she said, honest. She was so happy he was okay. "I'm okay. And it's okay. I don't blame you, Luke. Don't blame yourself. Please."
Luke: "You wouldn't be here if it weren't for me," Luke spoke in an almost whispered. His sister looked horrible. There were monitors all around her and he could see the scrapes on her body. This was all his fault and no one could tell him differently. "What did the doctors say was wrong?" Luke questioned. The doctors had left him in the dark about everything regarding his sister. They wouldn't answer any questions about where she was, how she was, or if she was breathing. He attributed to his father getting involved. But why hasn't their father seen him? Luke was obviously cut out of the public Baker life, but their father still streamed money into his bank account every month and obviously was paying for the Baker siblings solo hospital rooms. Something was adding up, but there wasn't anything Luke could do. Just as he opened his mouth to speak about their father, in walked the devil. "Rebecca how are you fee-," he paused noticing Luke besides her. "Lucas."
Becky shook her head. "Don't think that way, Luke. Please. I don't blame you at all. It was an accident." Ever since hearing about their mother, she had wanted to cling to her brother, to make him come home, to make sure he was safe. Because she couldn't lose him too. Not after this. She couldn't deal with it. She bit her lip when he asked what was wrong. She didn't want to tell, but knew that there was no sense in lying either. "I have a concussion...it's feeling better today. And I fractured a rib or two. But other than that i'm fine," she said, with a faint smile for his sake. Becky had barely seen her father since she got there. She knew he had to be busy...but it still hurt to not see him in the hospital at all. But she knew that she probably should have been glad to have a single room. When Mr. Baker walked in, Becky looked at him, not knowing what to say. "Where have you been?" She finally asked.
Luke sighed, looking over his sister. "If I had just listened to that doctor and stayed at the hospital... You'd be fine. We would have been with mom," his voice spoke weakly. He didn't want to dwell too much into their mother. These were feelings he wasn't ready to deal with yet. "You don't ask me questions like that," their father spoke sternly. He looked to Luke with almost disgust. This was a too familiar look. "I fixed your mess. The least you could do is thank me." Luke raised an eyebrow, his eyes bouncing between his sister and his father. "Mandatory community service to be served in the church, Drivers' Education, and once you are released – house arrest. You better be glad Judge Taff owned me," his father explained.
Becky looked at him and shook her head. "Stop," she said, taking his hand. "I don't blame you. Don't blame yourself. Please," She said, softly. She blinked away the tears at the mention of their mother and shook her head. She didn't know what to do with that. "Sorry," she said softly, looking down. It suddenly hit her that she was really and truly stuck with their father. For good. Their mother wasn't going to be there to stop things. She looked at Luke, and felt...shocked when he said that he had community service and house arrest. "House arrest?" She burst out, looking between them, wondering what she had missed. "What happened? Why?" She asked, not realizing that the house arrest was for the accident.
Luke grabbed onto his sister's hand, trying to give her some type of comfort in this situation. It was like his entire family was crumbling in on itself. "Fine, Becks. I won't mention it again," he replied. Luke nodded listening to his father rattling off his conditions. Luke knew he wasn't going to get out of this scratch free. At the very least he'd be giving back to the community through all this. "House arrest as in?" Luke questioned. Just as those words escaped his mouth, the father added," My house. You have two days to move everything in out of that apartment and into the basement."
Becky gently squeezed his hand back when he took hers in his hand and tried to get him to smile, even if it was just for a moment. "Okay. Good, i'm glad," she said, nodding her head. She ran her hand through her hair and just felt...anxious that her father was there, that they were putting Luke on house arrest for the accident. It just...was ridiculous. "Luke has to come home?" She asked, looking at her brother. She knew that he couldn't want to come home, and she couldn't blame him for that. Especially...without their mom there anymore. It was going to be different. And Becky didn't think that would be a good thing either.
Luke: gave a faint smile to his sister, not really interjecting into the conversation anymore. He figured it was no use arguing. Luke spent a almost half a year distancing himself from his father and trying to become a better man, but now Luke felt himself being pulled back into that scared little kid he was when he lived at home. "Don't question me. We're gonna need more help around the house. Now I need to finish with the funeral preparations. Feel better, princess. Lucas," Mr. Baker scowled. Luke nodded still not knowing how to feel how to feel about any of this.
Becky just watched her brother, and as selfish as she was for being happy that he would be home...she knew that this wasn't in Luke's best interest. And she couldn't believe that their father had done this. He hadn't cared about Luke or what he was doing for so long...why now? When Mr. Baker spoke so... emotionlessly about their mother's funeral, Becky just stared past him, not saying anything until the man was out of her room. She finally looked at Luke and tried to give him a small smile. "Luke...I'm sorry," she said softly.
Luke kept his eyes on the floor while his father went on. He waited til his father was completely out of the room before lifting out the chair and checking the time. "I should go," Luke mumbled. He struggled to keep his balance for a second before heading towards the door. "Feel better, Becks." And with that he was gone.
