Netflix Saves New York’s Paris Theatre With New Lease Agreement

Netflix will keep the iconic, single-screen arthouse open to present its own movies.

One expects more of this as studios move to streaming and closely guard the dissemination of their IP, in the new streaming era that I wish was already over.

I figured the rollback on those old restrictions had to do with Disney corporate consolidation and monopolization, but maybe it was to make room for this kind of thing?

Things...did not pan out this way for independent exhibitors following the Paramount Decision 13 years later. The major exhibitors--those circuits separated from the Hollywood Majors--did engage in a kind of collective booking practice, called “splitting,” whereby they’d cooperate to book releases within a particular market (”You take X from Paramount this time, and I’ll take Y from Fox, but next month I get A from MGM, and you’ll have to settle for B from Warners”), but this cooperation typically didn’t include the independent exhibitors and small chains. Bummer...
