John’s favorite pillow talk is listing possible traumatic injuries he might receive and whether Harold would still keep him.
“Amputation.”
“I could build your prosthesis myself, though I have no doubt you could adjust without one if you chose.”
“Total paralysis.”
“You have an excellent strategic mind and a far deeper understanding of human nature than my own. Your contributions would remain invaluable.”
“Brain damage.”
“Rather broad category, Mr. Reese. I would ensure your comfort and safety, and that you would not harm yourself or others. I would do whatever I could to make you happy. To whatever extent you were still comfortable, I would hold you and touch you with affection. Read to you if you liked. Sit near you quietly, without expectation.”
Then Harold has to spend a week preventing John running headlong into potentially brain-damaging situations because yes, that sounds perfect, John will take that, please.
