The passage of the year and the onset of the drought

When I'm out walking, I often pass this scrubby tree that sadly, looks to be on the way out. An important aspect of my work is continually revisiting a location to document how the passage of the seasons and also, the changing weather and light conditions, affect its mood. With the hot dry summer we're having, and now a drought, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to post up the images I've shot of this tree so far this year to show just how dramatic those changes have been.

Still parched…

The temperatures may have dropped a bit and we did have forty minutes of rain on Tuesday evening but, everywhere is still looking very dry. We're only a few weeks away from the start of the autumn and I really hope that brings some relief with cooler temperatures and some very badly needed rain…

We need rain…

Views of a parched landscape shot on a walk up to Bitton and back. Everywhere is looking parched… I'm old enough to remember the long hot summer of 1976 in England but, this is different and in some ways, a fair bit worse. When you set this against a toxic climate of unease across the country, it's all getting a bit worrying…

Utterly parched

These images were shot yesterday while walking up to Meadow Wood. As you can see, we haven't had any significant rain in weeks. The landscape should not be looking this dry, certainly not here in the West Country. Yet it was only three and a half months ago that these fields were a lush green and, there were boggy bits we had to either avoid or take care walking through. Give it three months from now, I expect it will again be greener and the boggy bits will return, courtesy of the autumn rain…
