Parched…

These images show what another dry, hot summer has done to the landscape. Give it around sixteen weeks, we'll be in November and, it will be looking vey different. Also, it will quite probably be very muddy as well…

Bristol, a city of 'contrasts'

Feelings of insecurity

These images were shot on a detour away from the busyness of the Bristol Harbour Festival and down to the relative wasteland surrounding parts of the New Cut. A part of central Bristol whose ultimate fate is still in the balance. Hence, a certain air of neglect and in places, an unspoken undertow of menace.

Leaning willows…

Willow trees by a stream that has eroded the banks enough to render them unstable and thus, prone to start leaning over at odd angles. Even though they lean, they still appear to be thriving. Nature always finds a way:)

Three bridges…

One over a brook, one carrying a railway bridge over a lane and one carrying the A4 main road over the same lane. Three very different structures. The one over the brook is boringly utilitarian and also, badly in need of some tender loving care. The one carrying the railway over a lane is classic 19th century civil engineering. Last but by no means least, the one carrying the A4 over the same lane is for the fans of concrete brutalism, particularly when it comes to weathering and stains:)

A shady walk:)

On account of the hot weather we're experiencing, I haven't been out much with the camera this month. A long walk carrying a heavy camera in the heat is a pretty uncomfortable experience, trust me on that one!

Yesterday was the first time in almost a fortnight that I've been out with a camera. As you can see from the images, as far as was possible, I was seeking the shade which provided some relief from the burning sun. Somehow I thought that counterintuitively rendering these images in black and white better conveyed the mood of a summer afternoon…

A photographic response…

Over the weekend, I read this travel piece: The artistic Essex coastal town with boutiques, seafood and a regatta - Christopher Beanland | The i Paper | 10.7.26. Liz and me both nearly spat our coffee out on reading this:) Don't get me wrong, Leigh-on-Sea does have an interesting arts scene but, if you're expecting a Whitstable or Southwold type break on the 'coast', you may be disappointed. Leigh-on-Sea is on the Thames estuary. The wide bit at the end admittedly but, it's still an estuary. With miles of mudflats at low tide. Also, a propensity to look pretty bleak when it's clouded over. This is my honest, photographic response to this travel piece. I would still recommend a visit but, please don't have any illusions:)

Along the path…

There's a certain 'something' about slowly walking along a footpath through the English countryside on a warm July afternoon. A 'something' that I felt had to be rendered in glorious black and white:)

It's July…

It's getting drier and we're heading towards another spell of hot weather. The hay has been cut and will soon be gathered, bundled up and used as cattle feed for the winter months. The leaves on the trees are turning a darker shade of green as we go through the summer. I need to make the most of this because in just eight weeks time, it will be early autumn. The wheel of life keeps on turning…

It's Stick Man!

Stick Man is a children's book, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. I've read this to my two grandchildren on quite a few occasions. So when I was walking up towards Bitton yesterday and saw this real life Stick Man in the hedge, I just had to take a photograph:)

Visiting the old oak - 27.6.26

We paid a visit to our favourite old oak tree yesterday. We sat on the bench under the protection of her branches, and for a while the troubles of the world faded into the background:)

Best avoided in future…

Whoever is managing this community woodland is dropping some not very subtle hints about the paths they want you to use and the ones they want you to avoid. This, as we found out to our cost after ducking under fallen trees and trying to negotiate overgrown paths, is one they don't want us to walk along. The lesson has been learned…

Meadows and woods:)

Over the last week here in the UK, it's been too hot and humid to go out for a long walk. We spent most of it doing not a lot apart from trying to stay cool and hydrated. Yesterday was the first time for a week when it felt comfortable enough to get out for a decent walk. Suffice to say, we made the most of it:)
