Transference - Work in Progress 

Transference is an experimental stereoscopic 3D narrative work exploring the themes of loss, memory and personal reconciliation. The main subject of the film is a young woman depicted in the west coast landscape dragging a heavy curtain around with her. As the scenes unfold the viewer floats in and out of two spaces: the natural landscape; cool and emancipating, yet weighted down with the struggle of the protagonist; and the urban landscape; romanticized and warm, but full of unspoken conflict. Cutting into the natural landscape while simultaneously blending in urban landscapes, Transference calls into question the viewer’s physical relationship with scale and space. The two types of landscapes represent past and present eras for the protagonist. Interstitial scenes of water reflect the protagonist’s frame of mind. The title has the double meaning relating to the emotional transference the medium of 3D can have on the viewer as well as the effect of the protagonist’s past relationship on her current self.

Transference is a recipient of a Media Arts Project Assistance Grant from the British Columbia Arts Council and is expected to release in August 2015.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

8 Minute Video Installation 

Every summer in Vancouver, Canada, the city hosts an international fireworks competition. Each country chooses a soundtrack to choreograph their light show over English Bay while a crowd of thousands watches from the beach. The spectacle and space that the crowd inhabits resonated visually as a subject, more so than the fireworks display itself. Somewhere Over the Rainbow (SOTR) is a documentary of the experience of this spectacle. With hundreds of people taking pictures with flashes in the dark, the crowd became the light show. Team Canada chose to choreograph their performance to the soundtrack of the classic film The Wizard of Oz. The video SOTR, made in a structuralist tradition, to the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow sets the overall tone for the piece and acts as the time structure for the arc of the 8 minute video. The point of view of the camera is fixed from further down the bay framing the main body of the crowd. The exposure is set for the level of illumination provided by the brightest explosion. The image is therefore mostly black, with very little visible other than a series of unexplained flashing and moving coloured lights. The video challenges the viewer’s senses until the moment that the source of the image is revealed, by a firework illuminating the crowd. There is something sinister about this massive gathering in the dark. A spectacle created by its spectators.
