As much as Narry wants to be an example to his child --- being independent, strong, and capable --- he's subconsciously reliant on his kid. He doesn't like the thought of his "sunshine" bearing any more responsibilities than a child like them should ever carry, but his need to be close is something he learned that comes with what he assumes to be "parenthood".
He loves his child so dearly that he wouldn't know what to do with himself if something scathes this small, soul. He'll apologise for being "clingy", but ultimately, his child would naturally be hooked to him as well.
