Parental Mythology
This post is a bit later than usual. It's still technically on schedule (we're still Monday) but I do usually post early in the morning but I had to make an exception for today.
Children hear this expression all the time:
Mange tes croûtes si tu veux grandir.
It's French for: Eat your crusts if you want to grow tall (roughly). I'm not sure how cultural this is but I'm sure there are other variants if it's not the same elsewhere.
It's myths like this that you hear all the time when you're a kid but don't go about reflecting on it challenge the authority. It's mostly just noise and one more request for you to do something: eat your crust!
It just occurred to me yesterday that bread crusts almost certainly don't have special properties to make one grow tall. And yet, it's hard not to pass on myths we've heard when we were young to our own off-springs, isn't it?
