happy father’s day (australia) to all the oldest daughters, random male characters that fandoms are obsessed with, kids whose mothers unhealthily depended on them for emotional support at a young age, middle aged therapist dudes who are surprisingly cool, old dudes in your community who are genuinely kind and grandpa-adjacent, everyone who parented themselves, assorted dilfs, and that one guy who runs a life skills youtube channel for people who didn’t have present dads.
thinking about when my mom traumatized me by screaming at me and unloading her sexual trauma on me and forcing me to swear to keep my virginity until marriage because she found my incredibly tame crush poetry about liking older boys and thinking about kissing and marrying them.
most of the profanity in the poems was coded in ways that she straight-up isn't smart enough or versed enough in poetry to understand, but she also took issue with the very scant but censored actual outright profanity i used. because a 15 year old using the word 'fucking' as an adjective is, like, totally the end of the fucking world.
when she moved cross country without us, i went through and threw away all that poetry. sometimes i kinda wish i had kept it, especially since drugs shot holes through my memory, but i do remember enough to know that it doesn't really matter. the damage is done and the poems weren't that good. but i was very cute and bright and have always been like this, just in case you're wondering.
there was one poem with an acrostic title of the word 'bullshit' and i remember one of the Ls was represented by the word 'llamas.' feel free to fill in the blanks here; i don't remember the rest. it was a crush poem about not feeling good enough for an older man, or acting coy about liking an older man, or something. the title was only tangentially related.
then i had a series of short 'sun and moon' metaphor poems. those ones were cute. or, at least, i think they were. they weren't about me. not really. my mom didn't like those ones because she thought they were about me. they were about a young couple being bad for each other.
well, i'm still writing poetry and it's still riddled with profanity and sexual themes and bad relationships. fuck you, mom. you couldn't stop me, and now i'm making it my entire fucking job to write profane, sexual, bad poetry.

Thinking about the *increase* in misogyny from my cisgender mother I experienced post-coming out. Before, when people could rationalize my behavior as tomboyish, or a girl struggling to fit in, it was..... somewhat tolerated. a young teen not ready to grow up.
When I came out though, people were suddenly paying much closer attention to my gendered expression and my body. Anything I said was androgynous or masculine enough to give me comfort was explained away as "beautiful & feminine & *female*, and don't you forget it!"
My parents promised to use my chosen name, but it was depressingly obvious they only considered it a phase and never actually bothered to try. (after all, they *must* know me better than I could ever know myself) When I asked my mother to use my correct pronouns, she said that I was too feminine for her to even try, despite the fact I was unable to HRT (she wouldn't let me start, as I was still a minor at the time), and already doing everything I possibly could to present in a masculine way.
She balked when I briefly mentioned wanted to legally change my name years after I initially came out. She wouldn't entertain the idea of allowing me getting a short haircut, insisting that I didn't have the face to pull it off (weaponizing beauty standards). She was (mostly) quietly unhappy when I did finally get it cut through a family member, but outright banned my younger sibling from getting an unauthorized haircut after he took it into his own hands to shave his off completely. She saw her afab children as a direct extension of herself, and any deviance from her desired level of femininity was a personal attack.
