100 years ago this June, Mary Cassatt died in France. The only American in the Impressionist circle, she spent her career turning everyday moments into serious art. "The Letter" from 1890-91 shows why she remains so distinctive. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, Cassatt flattened space, simplified shadows and let pattern carry the composition.
