This is Bistro In A Suburb - painted by French artist Maurice Utrillo in 1910. 🎨 Normally known for capturing street scenes in and around his Montmartre neighborhood, in his early years Maurice ventured out to the working class suburbs of Paris where he could paint and drink to his heart’s content and not worry about reproducing copy cat scenes similar to other famous artists working in and around Paris at that time. 🍷 At this stage in his career, Maurice was a struggling artist, often intoxicated, and perfectly happy to exchange a painting for a bottle of wine or two. Now, his works completed during this time (before 1920) are some of his most sought after paintings by collectors. 🎨 Throughout his life, Maurice battled mental illness and alcoholism but he’s considered a genius in the art world because those two struggles never affected or interfered with his painting abilities and the consistency in which he captured his subjects. 🎨 I love the way he can paint a scene that seems whimsical but also very matter of fact all at the same time. And of course I love the colors and the angles he used to introduce us to a street and a scene. His work was one of the greatest discoveries I encountered during the pandemic last year. I’m so excited to offer a vintage batch of his reproduction prints from the 1950s in the shop. Find this one and one other in the art section now, with more to come over the course of this next week. . . . . . #mauriceutrillo #utrillo #frenchartists #parispaintings #bistro #kitchenart #vintageparis #parislove #20thcenturyart https://www.instagram.com/p/COTG7C8pR4l/?igshid=1bz865gotohr0
