I’m alone in my double during Reunion (my roommate went home after finals!), and I haven’t packed up to go home yet, so I thought I would give a super quick room tour! I have a double in Park House, though the Annex also has a lot of nice rooms, as well! I love that I was lucky enough to have a big room with big closets, A great view of Paradise Pond, and minimal stairs to climb to get to my bed after a long day. I’m gonna miss this room next year for sure! I’ve found my ways to stay organized and personalize my space.

Commencement is fast approaching, so I wanted to take a look back to Senior Banquet, which was at the beginning of May. Every house does something a little bit different, but for Park House, we all dressed up to enjoy some sushi and a TON of dessert, and celebrate our seniors by reading off some silly/serious prophecies, giving them gifts, and the seniors will some of their special belongings to underclassmen. There were a lot of laughs and tears. It’s super motivating to see the seniors make it to the end of their time at Smith. It feels so far away, and yet my first year is already over!

You live in Park, right? What would you say are the pros and cons of Park? Thanks! <3

Hi! I do indeed live in Park House. (P-A-R-K-I-E-S, Parkies are the very best!) There’s a lot to love about my house (and more specifically my room). There are also a few cons, but nothing I can’t handle!

Pros:

Center Campus isn’t far from much. Being in Center Campus, I’m really never farther than 5 minutes from any important place on campus (I also walk very fast, so it’s even more convenient). But seriously, if you walk or even use a bike or Razor scooter, you’ll get places so fast. Also, I get as much of Quad Life as I want without actually living in the Quad, because it’s just not for me. Also: we are right next to Admissions, so it’s not hard to find.

The view! From my room, I have a perfect view of Paradise Pond. Keep in mind only Park and Chapin have a view this good...In addition, I can easily see passers-by and figure out how to dress for the weather because I always forget to check the forecast.

My room has more than enough space. Every house at Smith is different, and so are the rooms. Depending on where you live you can have window seats, windows with non- rectangular shapes, sloping ceilings, etc. I count my blessings because as a first-year, my roommate and I have the biggest double in Park! I don’t have a huge room at home with my sister, and my room at Smith is easily almost two times bigger. I over-packed and have a big closet to make up for it, too. Park overall has nice rooms, and I’m happy to be here.

The people make the house. I got to Smith super early for preseason, so the first people I met in Park were my Res Life staff, as well as my teammate who is a fellow Parkie. They made my transition much easier than I imagined, and so did my housemates as they moved in and just hung out around the House and the Annex. It’s really nice having an annex, actually. More people to see, plus you can live in the House one year and the Annex the next while being in the same community.

Cons:

In terms of accessibility, we don’t have an elevator or wheelchair lift. It would give people who need those things another housing option, which would be nice. Also, living on the bottom floor and going to find someone on the third floor is a struggle.

If there is any construction nearby, we don’t hear the end of it. Luckily, all of that is done! So, there’s nothing to bother us or jolt us awake when we need precious sleep. Everyone needs Center Campus as it is the, well, center. 

We don’t have a dining hall. I would love to walk downstairs in pajamas and easily get a meal, but we do not have that luxury. Luckily, both King/Scales and Cutter/Ziskind are a quick walk away.
