Team Penske had beaten out the Ford factory team in the 1968 & 1969 seasons with their Camaros, but just barely. Hoping to break Penske's winning streak, Jones & Moore worked towards faster pit times and began using Goodyear tires for better performance throughout each race.

These strategic changes, along with Penske's switch to the AMC Javelin, allowed Ford to clinch the title and take home the 1970 Trans Am Championship!

Parnelli Jones dives out of his car after it caught fire in the pits during the Indianapolis 500 auto race May 30, 1964. He suffered burns and was hospitalized but was not seriously hurt. Jones, won the 1963 Indy 500.

Parnelli Jones survived the most dangerous eras of auto racing and became a hero to people young enough to be his grandchildren. One of the best drivers to run the Indy 500 -- and if you look at his career stats in that race, you'd be surprised he didn't run it more often than he did.
