Highway 89 - pt. 1
Country roads at night are the purest of black. They stretch on forever, with no light or sound of civilization. One mile is the same as the next, leading to a state of Highway Hypnosis; a state of mind where the driver feels almost asleep because there is nothing to focus on. and on the darkest of nights, it is only fitting for the darkest thoughts to wreak havoc. this was the situation Jason found himself in on that hot august night.
Jason stared out the windshield of his car, watching the road fly past him through the limiting illumination of his headlights. He never liked driving on these country highways at night. Even with his bights on, the lights only showed a limited amount of the road in front and around him. there was always such a clear line drawn between what was visible from the headlights and what was perpetually kept in darkness. within that very visible line, he could control the situation; a piece refuse on the road was easy to avoid when you could see it. but outside that barrier, was wholly unknown. Jason would argue that he wasn't afraid of the dark, but of what the dark kept hidden. instinct told him that he should stop for the night, but he wanted to make a little bit more distance for the day.
Jason looked in the rearview mirror, seeing his daughter, Molly, abnormally awake for this time of night. the two of them had been driving since mid-morning, and though she had slept for a little bit earlier in the day he knew that a nice hotel room would do her good. He had told her they were going on vacation after all, and what vacation would be complete without staying at a good hotel. Thankfully, Molly was young enough that to her any hotel was an exciting adventure. Just seeing his daughter in her car seat, looking out the window with the sort of excitement that only a child can have, made Jason feel as if all was right in the world if only for a moment. as reality came back to him, he put his eyes back on the road and kept driving.
almost as if she knew that her father had just been looking at her, Molly spoke up from the back. "Daddy, I'm hungry. how long until we get there?"
Jason instinctually looked at the car clock before remembering that it had broken the week before. not that knowing the time would have done him much good. He knew they were heading west, but other than that he had no idea where they were, let alone how long until they found a hotel. that was another reason Jason hated driving on these backroads; there was literally nothing around them. On an interstate, you might only have to drive for an hour before you would find a hotel or rest area of some sort. He had been driving west on this specific highway for probably 4 or 5 hours by his best guess and he hadn't seen anywhere that they could pull off and stop.
"I'm not sure, baby. but I'll stop at the next spot I find," he answered back. This seemed to be answer enough for her, as she didn't ask any more questions. That was easily one of his favorite things about her; her unbounded curiosity. even after answering questions all day for her about anything and everything, she could still ask the most pertinent question of all; Why. Jason had lost count of how many times he had answered that same question over the past year. and no matter how many times she asked it, he would always smile and answer her as best as he could. He knew that brain of hers would take her someplace amazing when she got older. Jason looked back in the rearview mirror and saw that she had apparently fallen asleep again. He was surprised that she had been awake long enough to say she was hungry. It was very late after all. Jason again found himself looking at the clock on the car despite the futility of it. Old habits, he surmised.
Jason kept the car going for about another half hour by his best guess, when finally he saw the first sign of life other than the two of them in the car. Off on the right was a gas station advertising itself as The Last Stop. Jason didn't recognize the name, but it looked to be a relatively large stop considering the complete lack of anything for miles. Jason gladly pulled the car over and got out of the car for the first time in probably 5 or 6 hours. He tightened up all the muscles in his legs, giving them the good long stretch that they needed. He arched his back and stretched his arms over his head likewise, feeling the aching muscles relax finally. When his arms were fully extended however, Jason felt a rather sharp pain in his right arm. quickly pulling it back, he felt his elbow react poorly to the stretch he had given it. the more he tried to move the joint, the more it started to hurt. Jason couldn't remember what he had done to the arm to make it hurt like this, and just chalked it up to the long hours on the road.
The door let out a ding-a-ling from the bell attached at the top as Jason walked into the Last Stop. Looking around, he quickly found the restrooms and made his way with haste. Those liter sodas hit Jason's bladder as soon as he had stood up from the car, and relief was needed desperately. He power walked to the back of the store, found himself a stall, and finally released the pent up pressure that had built so quickly. after a solid minute standing at the urinal and reading the domestic violence poster the gas station had put up, Jason felt much better. Stopping by the sink, he noticed an odd piece of decoration that had been left out. in between the two sink bowls was a solid granit sphere resting in a small ridged stand to keep it from just rolling away. Normally he wouldn't have even noticed it, but it made him chuckle just seeing it because he was sure that his ex-wife had something just like that. He remembered her getting it while they were still together as something to put right next to the door in the entryway. She said something about it being an "eye catcher" when people first walked in. He wondered if she still had it.
Stepping back into the small convenience store part of the Last Stop, Jason gave the isles a quick look. He needed to restock on his dink and find something for Molly incase she woke up before they made it to the hotel. He grabbed himself two more of the liter soda bottles, a cheap bag of sunflower seeds to keep his hands busy, and grabbed a bag of beef jerky for Molly. Jason wasn't sure if Molly would like the jerky, but unfortunately The Last Stop really didn't have a lot of variety. It clearly catered to long distance truckers, and didn't have much in the way of snacks for 3 year olds. as he was about to go to the register to check out, he found a small princess toy hanging from a rack on the end of one of the isles. it seemed very out of place in this trucker heave store, but Jason found himself considering it. He looked at the price tag on the doll, giving a sharp intake of air at reading the price. but he thought about it, and all he could imagine was the look of joy on Molly's face when she would see it. No matter how much he was struggling, anything was worth seeing that face on his daughter. So the doll found it's way into his bundle as he made his way to the checkout, leaving the bag of sunflower seeds in the dolls place. He wasn't actually hungry, he had just picked them up for something to do after all.
Jason placed his haul on the counter by the register and waited as he watched an older woman walk over from the far side of the store to check him out. She had a face that was impossible to actually put an age too, falling anywhere between 50 and 80. Her hair was a dirty blonde, with enough streaks of brown in it to make the lighter parts of her hair almost stand out. Her face had lines from years of being out in the sun, but her eyes still held the fight of life in them. Her nametag clearly advertised her name as Flo, and for some reason that name truly seemed to fit her in Jason's mind. the sound of a woman named Flo working anywhere except an insurance commercial, and hers was the face that would have popped into Jason's mind. Flo pulled a drag from her cigarette that seemed to appear in her hand and blew it out before addressing Jason.
"This all for you, honey?" as soon as she began speaking, you could hear the affects of clearly a life long habit of smoking had had on her. She still had the higher tone and lilt that made her seem young, but the deep rasp that came from the cancer candy. Jason told her it was, and she began to scan the few items he had up. When she scanned the princess doll, she let out an audible awww.
"Hold old is your daughter?"
Jason began pulling out his wallet as he responded. "She's 3 now. Turning 4 at the end of November."
"That's such a magical age for kids, starting to leave being a toddler and just beginning to become aware of the larger world around them. The total is $17.56, dear."
Jason could help a smile at that. He was pretty sure he had said the exact same thing when describing Molly more than once. "She is the most curious little kid I've had the pleasure of knowing. I swear she asks me well over a hundred questions every day." Jason took a quick look in his wallet and, ignoring the debit card, began to pull out a couple of bills to pay for the purchase. He quickly found the $17 dollars needed, but began scrounging looking for the remaining 56 cents. He didn't have anymore cash, and didn't think he could afford to use the debit card here. After digging through his pants pockets and only being able to find a single quarter, Jason began to wonder if searching the car would bring him any better results. before he had the chance to apologize and excuse himself, Flo just waved a hand at him.
"No need to go wake the sleeping one, I can cover the rest," she said with the most grandmotherly smile possible. Even though it had only been a few cents, not needing to go through the embarrassment of going to his car digging meant more to him in that moment than he could say.
"Thank you," he finally managed to eek out. " It's hard sometimes, knowing what you want for them and seeing what you have the ability to provide."
"Oh believe me, I know. Is the mother still in the picture?" Flo asked as she began loading his purchase into a bag. Jason let out a painful sigh from deep within him.
"She is, but not not the same one as me," Jason clenched his fist, but fought back the rising emotions. "We got divorced about a year ago."
Flo simply nodded solemnly. Jason could read it on her face that she understood much more than just what he had said. Jason hated this part, the awkward apologies, the attempts to make it better with just their words. Flo seemed to cut right to the chase though, and ask the hardest question.
"How often do you get to see her?"
Jason felt the usual pain that always came with this line of questions. He took a deep breath and said his practiced answer. "Not enough."
Flo simply nodded and made no further inquires. She simply handed him the bag with his purchase and gave him a warming smile. "Then we just have to make the most of the time we are given. You never know when things might change."
With that, Jason just gave a simple nod in response and headed back out to the car. Getting back in the driver seat, he felt the true emotions come boiling up. He tried so hard to just survives questions like that, but today especially his time with Molly was a particularly sore subject. Ashlyn had some nerve to try and bull the shit that she did. Taking a deep breath in and holding it, Jason tried to let go of all the pent up anger with the exhale. sometimes this worked and sometimes it didn't. It seemed that this time it didn't, at least not fully. but, there was nothing more he could do about it now. So he bottled up what ever emotion had hung around, put the car into reverse, and pulled out of The Last Stop.
