Egg update 08.18.2021:

I finally gave up on it. The smell was so bad. In truth I knew it was a goner a couple of weeks ago, but at that point I was curious to see how moldy an egg could get before collapsing.

Results? Well if the white and yolk solidify it probably won’t—which is exactly what happened. Click below for science gross:

So upon cutting the egg I realize everything has solidified in there. The smell is bad enough but that? That was a big ew. I get the shell completely peeled away and was left with this:

Ewwwwwww.

So then I’m thinking, well I’m gonna have to dissect that, see if there’s any development. Pick up the X-Acto knife, poke it, and immediately prod a little growth loose.

Aaaaaaaaaand…development:

Not much—it got just far enough to make some eyes and little more. But there you have it! One more attempt at beardie parthenogenic life. Good try, little buddy.

Egg Update 10.16.2020:

Egg 3 failed. I came home to find it collapsing, sweating, discolored and smelling godawful. We are down to 2.

I did open it because I wanted to see what was going on in the bottom of the egg.  This was the egg where all I could ever see was veins and nothing else, but there was some weird solid something that just looked like a big blotch. 

I...was not ready.  There was definitely fetal growth and this one got much farther than the original mystery egg.

I can’t tell you what was going on here, other than that is a lizard. Look how far along they got this time! The skull hadn't quite finished. The snout is tiny and round. But the tail, the legs...the definition is there! That is a lizard!

Oh I'm so sorry, little one. I can only hope that this was a kindness, that something wasn't happening right with you.

I'm probably going to bury this one. That's...that's too much a lizard.
