SS Chicora

Great lakes passenger steamer - Launched June 26th, 1892 - Considered a masterpiece of a great lakes steamer and the flagship of the Graham and Morton Line - Sent out for a late winter shipment of flour from Milwaukee only to be caught in a winter storm. She sank in Lake Michigan on January 21st, 1895. 21 crew and a single passenger went down with her. To this day, her wreckage has never been found with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum considering her a “Most Wanted” vessel

May I introduce - this is Izzy the ship's cat of the SS Great Britain. Sadly, she passed away on Friday 21 April this year.

On June 13, 1942, photographer B.H. Nicholas captured an image of three passenger steamers on the Detroit River.  On the right, the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company's CITY OF CLEVELAND III is docked along the riverfront.  On the left edge of the frame, the ALABAMA passes along the river.  In the distance, near the Ambassador Bridge, the Chicago, Duluth and Georgian Bay Transit Company’s SOUTH AMERICAN appears to be turning around in the river.

St Joseph - Chicago Steamshop Company - Sailing out of Chicago on July 24, 1915 the "Eastland" rolled over at a dock on the Chicago River. More than 800 perished and the wrecked vessel was taken over by the United States government. The Chicago Ship Building Company rebuilt the excursion liner "Eastland" to a training gunboat for the US Navy in 1917. Christened the "Wilmette", the vessel was used until it was scrapped in 1948.

Passenger Steamer "Eastern States" built Wyandotte, Michigan 1902, ran Detroit-to-Chicago route until 1938. Still in use 1949.
