I saw this passion vine 🌸 @grayesgreenhouse Saturday and snapped a picture. It was too far above me to be able to smell the flower, but I know it smells heavenly. This one is allowed to ramble up and around the roof of the greenhouse. I buy a small one every year to grow in an outdoor container. I place it on a trellis in a pot at the end of my walk to the front door so I can see it and smell it every day. I never seem to be able to get it to live inside. How about you? I keep trying, though. Maybe I'll just grow it inside so that it acclimates itself right from the start to my inside conditions. I find that works better most of the time- rather than moving a plant from outside into the house. Have you found that to be true for you, too? . . #passionvine #greenhouse #localgreenhouse #flowersofinstagram #scentedflowers #purpleflowers #vine #houseplantsinpots #bhghome #betterhomesandgardens #plantaddict #plantnerd #plantsmakepeoplehappy #greenyourfeed #house_plant_community https://www.instagram.com/p/B9g8aAHA6uA/?igshid=1994oxt87wuez
Passion Flower vines have swirling tendrils that are seeking something to climb. This one here swirls above our sweet potato nursery where we are making slips for planting. Truelove Seeds apprentice Julia Aguilar has spent years working with medicinal herbs, and she told us that Passion Flower is a gentle sedative that helps to ease our swirling, anxious thoughts. Because of this she likes to include the spiraling tendrils with the leaves, vines, and flowers when making medicine. Passion Flower is native to the southern US where it is known as Ocoee or Uwaga in Cherokee. Traditionally, all parts of the plant are used for food and medicine. In the Cherokee Phoenix, Shawna Cain wrote that “the Cherokee have historically used the flower as a mild sedative for restlessness, anxiety, nervous stomach, high blood pressure and symptoms of menopause. Passion Flower roots are bruised and made into a poultice used to “draw out” poisons from boils and cuts while a tincture is also made and dropped into infected ears to relieve earaches”. In our hoop house, this plant is spreading far and wide, so we will be harvesting lots of it for dried tea and tinctures all season. And of course, in the late summer we will be eating lots of it’s “apricots” (or “maypops”) and saving the seeds for www.trueloveseeds.com. #passifloraincarnata #maypop #ocoee #passionflower #passionvine https://www.instagram.com/seedkeeping/p/Bw29CdalnXM/?igshid=gzdtvzdlu86v
PASSIONFLOWER at the LA Zoo by ©Laura Quick
We had a passion vine growing in our backyard growing up. Mostly it hosted Gulf Fritillary caterpillars who hung their Chrysalis from the spokes of our unused bikes.
Passion Vines
Species: Passiflora incarnata
Habitat: A backyard garden in Southern California
Personality: Mischevious, bossy, attention-seeking, deceiving, authoritarian
Description: The passion vine spirits appear somewhat humanoid although very plant-like, taking on the colors and characteristics of the incredible looking flowers with lavender and yellow. The spirits hover around and above the densest cluster of vines, and I’ve only so far seen one spirit per cluster, not one for every individual flower or vine shoot.
Mythological & Cultural Background:
The "Passion" in "passion flower" refers to the passion of Jesus in Christian theology. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the unique physical structures of this plant, particularly the numbers of its various flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus and especially his crucifixion... Outside the Christian heartland, the regularly shaped flowers have reminded people of the face of a clock. In Israel they are known as "clock-flower" (שעונית) and in Greece as "clock plant" (ρολογιά); in Japan too, they are known as tokeisō (時計草, "clock plant"). - Wikipedia
Medicinal Uses:
The fresh or dried leaves of maypop are used to make a tea that is used for insomnia, hysteria, and epilepsy, and is also valued for its analgesic properties. Once dried, the leaves can also be smoked. - Wikipedia
My Experiences
I hope I’m not mischaracterizing the whole species of passion vines, but my experiences with them so far have been not too great. There are two clusters of passion vines in my parent’s garden with one spirit each. I don’t know their names, but let’s call them Reina and Hermana for the sake of this post.
I met Reina first when I was scanning the energy of the garden for the first time this summer to get myself re-acquainted with the spirits there. Her vines have wrapped around most of the base of the two palm trees holding up our hammock, and have completely taken over the entire hammock. She looks like one thick massive oblong mini-forest of vines, flowers, and some fruits. I have always loved passion fruit because it’s delicious, but this was the first time I had seen the exotic flowers up close in so great a number. While trying to scan the rest of the garden, I was overwhelmed by Reina’s energy because she was the biggest and most energetically powerful force there. So I felt I must go over and introduce myself - then I quickly realized she’s a big of a trickster, a trouble-maker, giving me coy smiles and indirect answers to questions. After several conversations, I wondered if she was fae not just a nature spirit. She said she was indeed fae, and so for a while I somehow believed her. Now I have come to understand that she really is just the passion vine’s spirit - and a very mischievous one at that. Once while chanting mantras during a house cleansing, I noticed Reina dancing and enjoying the magical sounds. Today when my step-mom was watering her, she sent out grateful energy despite other frustrations she has with us at the moment.
The other passion vine, Hermana, lives all the way across the garden by the toolshed on the fence. Sequestered in the back, I didn’t actually notice her and speak with her until later. Hermana and Reina claim that they are sisters. While Hermana is a bit more reserved than Reina, she also has a noticeably dominating and scheme attitude to her demeanor. Both spirits feel that they are powerful beings and are more than happy for this to be known by all they converse with. They also clearly want to be admired.
